Like a good joke, Boston Dynamics said goodbye to Atlas the humanoid robot, and one day later, introduced an enhanced version of the humanoid robot with the same name.
The biggest difference between the two humanoid robots is the old Atlas is driven by hydraulic while the new Atlas is pure electric.
Over the many years of watching old Atlas performing stunts, you will notice from some of the videos that hydraulic is one of the biggest challenges of it. In the farewell video of Atlas, Boston Dynamics showcased the good and the bad of it. Check it out. BTW, Boston Dynamic is calling it HD Atlas. I guess it might refer to Hydraulic Driven Atlas. What do you think?
And just one day later, Boston Dynamics introduced the fully electric Atlas. I think it is a little creepy way of introducing it. Check it out.
I think the electric Atlas must have been through years of testing. In a blog post, you can see that Boston Dynamics already hinted that Atlas will be tested at Hyundai’s manufacturing factory.
This journey will start with Hyundai—in addition to investing in us, the Hyundai team is building the next generation of automotive manufacturing capabilities, and it will serve as a perfect testing ground for new Atlas applications. In the months and years ahead, we’re excited to show what the world’s most dynamic humanoid robot can really do—in the lab, in the factory, and in our lives.

I am looking forward to how this new electric Atlas can finally contribute to the workforce. BTW, the first time I saw the video of the electric Atlas, it reminds me of the robot in the drama “Lost in Space”. Do you think so?
