Infographic: Why you should pay a decent price for a professional Wedding Photographer

This infographic should be a “must read” for all brides/grooms-to-be before deciding who to choose and what price to pay for a wedding photographer (actual day or pre-wedding). It shows the “behind-the-scenes” of the cost that a professional photographer has to bear in producing their works to the brides/grooms.

Why is it a “must read”?

For people who did not know photography, it is not anyone with a DSLR or SLR a photographer. Or anyone who label themselves Wedding Photographers are good photographers, or know anything about wedding photography.

The infographic let non-photographers and brides/grooms-to-be a chance to see what they are paying, and to allow professional photographers to let their clients understand the cost they are charging are actually not so straight forward.

Of course, the infographic is just a reference. For example, in Singapore, I don’t see professional wedding photographers doing their own prints. You can also argue that the photography skills that they acquired should not be put as a cost to the clients. I disagree because the skills make them what they are and why they can or are charging that amount. It should be part of the package. If not, you can get any Tom, Dick or Harry to shoot your wedding with the same equipments.

So, which photographer should I choose?

I think I talked too much. I am not even a wedding photographer to start with. But I do get requests from friends to recommend a good wedding photographer. My answer is always the same. Choose a registered wedding photography company (A company usually will have some contract or agreement signed to ensure there is always back up plan in case their photographer falls sick or otherwise). Check out the works and most probably the company might have more than one photographers. Identify which are the pictures that speak to you (that you like) and note the photographer’s name. Check out his/her latest work to ensure that his/her skills are consistent. Talk to this photographer if possible. Remember, you will have to work with him/her for a whole day. It is important to feel comfortable.

Then it is up to you to negotiate a good deal. Did you realize that I did not even recommend? There are so many wedding photographers out there. Depending on your budget and expectations, my “good” might not be your “good”. That is why I could not recommend.

Do not go for a cheap deal and then expect everything to be “OK” whatever “OK” means to you. This is especially important for pre-wedding shoots as it often requires creativity and skills of the photographer to bring out the pictures. Got it?
