Finally, someone has done it. Check out the Marbel Board, an electric skateboard that is super light at 4.5 kg (9.9 pounds). Looking like any other skateboard, it is unlike anything I have seen before.
The good news is that you can buy it. Yes, what you see above is something that will be built and sold. The bad news is that since it is a Kickstarter project, you will never know how long you have to wait for delivery (although it stated first batch for delivery is November 2014 (sold out) and second batch is in January 2015).
If you have not been following the progress of electric powered skateboard or skate scooters, you will not know how difficult it is to find one that looks so slick and functional (Based on the video).
Most of the skateboards that are electric powered are either very heavy or not very appealing (ugly). This is one of the few (if not the first) that is finally looking like what I perceive as a good looking electric skateboard.
Pricing wise, it is subjective (currently at USD1,199). To me, it is quite competitive (means pricing is ok) with such design and built. Here are the tech specs.
Design-wise, they have taken a number of good considerations:
The nose and tail of the board are the only parts not carbon fiber or kevlar. They are made of Urethane rubber, the same material our wheels are made from. We call them “bumpers”, and they completely protect the front and back of the Marbel board from any impact. They also protect the tail of the board when you set it on the ground. To protect the sides and belly of the board, we utilize a Kevlar composite.
They even made an app (iOS and Android) for this skateboard. They can be used to fully customize the Marbel Board (from speed to acceleration, power saving and etc).
If you don’t like to use your smartphone to control it, it has a wireless controller.
So, if you don’t mind the risk (as in any Kickstarter project), do support it.
