This might be a new class of camcorder from Canon. Introducing the new LEGRIA Mini. It is supposedly to be a daily camcorder that you can slip into your pocket. With its unique design, it can be used for creative filming and golfers or dancers can use the mirror function to review their movements. The new LEGRIA Mini is now available at Canon authorised dealers at a recommended retail price of S$429.
I especially like the WiFi feature. Now, you can control the video camera remotely by using an app (iOS and Android). The sensor is the typical size for compact camera. This product feels more like a camera with video feature than a video camera itself. However, based on the Press Release, it has the same LEGRIA engine and features found in the Canon LEGRIA camcorder.
I am not so sure why Canon wanted to put such a wide angle lens (170 degrees) on it. It feels that the video is distorted. Nevertheless, it also means that you can capture more. Here is a video of it

The Canon LEGRIA Mini – a Revolutionary Video Camera Designed for Creative Filming and Self-Expression
Record and share dynamic videos with the LEGRIA Mini’s ultra-wide angle lens and Wi-Fi capabilities
SINGAPORE, 5 September 2013 – The Canon LEGRIA Mini is set to bring the experience of recreational videography to a whole new level. The new V-log (video-log) camera sits in a brand new category within the LEGRIA camcorder family and is also Canon’s first video camera to feature a built-in 170-degree view ultra-wide angle f/2.8 lens. Designed specifically for today’s mobile-savvy generation that enjoys sharing videos on social networking sites, the LEGRIA Mini inherits Canon’s superior optical technologies to provide users with the convenience of shooting and sharing high-quality videos on-the-go.
“With the new LEGRIA Mini, we hope to change the way consumers tell and share stories of themselves and things important to them through video. Portable and sleek, the uniquely styled compact personal camcorder gives users unparalleled flexibility and freedom to explore their creativity,” said Edwin Teoh, Assistant Director for Consumer Business Marketing, Canon Singapore. “Along with incorporated Wi-Fi capabilities and creative effects, the sharing of fun and high-quality videos on social networking sites has never been easier.”
An ultra-wide angle lens for dynamic videos
The LEGRIA Mini captures an astounding 170-degree view in still photography and 160-degrees in video. The ultra-wide angle f/2.8 lens grants superior coverage over a wide perspective, making it extremely easy to record close up videos of oneself as well as a group of friends, even in confined spaces such as recording studios or the interior of a car. The wide view is complemented by sharp background, which keeps everything in the frame in sharp focus. Should users opt for a more conventional shot, they can switch to a close-up view at the touch of a button.
Hands Free Shooting
To enable users to shoot and share videos of themselves without giving away the fact that they were part of the filming process, the LEGRIA Mini features a one of a kind hands-free design concept that uses a unique built-in stand to perch itself up.
The 2.7-inch Vari-angle LCD electrostatic touch-screen monitor also allows for many different shooting styles, as it uses two parallel hinges to allow for many different configurations, and the screen is able to auto-rotate and invert itself for easy viewing. Users can easily shoot from extremely low or high angles, and even upside down shots, and discover new ways to record videos in the process.
Compact and lightweight design
Filming high-quality videos on the go has been made more convenient with the LEGRIA Mini. Unlike the rest of the LEGRIA family, the LEGRIA Mini spots a unique flat design akin to a small wallet to suit the increasingly mobile lifestyles of users.
The slim (76 x 22 x 96mm) and light weight (160g) LEGRIA Mini fits easily in your back pocket, which makes carrying it around everyday much more convenient. To preserve the fun aspect of the LEGRIA Mini, operating it has been kept extremely simple, with minimal buttons and an intuitive touch user interface.
Superior video and sound
The power-packed LEGRIA Mini features the same imaging engine used in Canon’s professional camcorders, allowing for the detailed capturing of optimum video and sound quality. With a 12-megapixel high-sensitivity CMOS sensor and the latest DIGIC DV4 image processor, videos can be recorded at a superior quality of 1920 x 1080 at 25p. – The High Sensitivity (HS) system enhances the camcorder’s low light performance and is capable of delivering high-quality video and still images with minimal noise. Auto Dynamic Range control and new gamma curve settings prevent over/under exposure in high-contrast situations, common when recording under strong sunlight. As the LEGRIA Mini uses a mechanical shutter, the distortion that is normally associated with conventional CMOS sensor video recording is reduced.
The LEGRIA Mini captures superb sound quality through the use of a built-in stereo microphone. Just as the video can be fine-tuned through the selection of appropriate video modes, the sound can also be optimally adjusted by simply selecting the correct Audio Scene Select function. To boost sound recording, users can choose scenarios in the Audio Scene Select function, such as Standard, Music, Speech, Forest and Birds, and Noise Suppression (useful in environments with loud ambient noise such as moving cars and playgrounds).
Ready to share
Video sharing has never been easier with the LEGRIA Mini. With built-in Wi-Fi connectivity, videos can be shared directly onto social networking sites like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube using CANON iMAGE GATEWAY or via mobile devices using the Movie Uploader App. Users need not worry about the conversion of video formats as videos shot using the LEGRIA Mini are recorded natively in MP4 format, which is commonly used by popular social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube as well as mobile devices like tablets and smartphones.
Remote shooting via Wi-Fi is also made possible with the CameraAccess App (available for free download for iOS and Android devices). This additional functionality provides user with the freedom of mounting the camcorder in usually inaccessible spaces while still being able to control it from a distance.
Fun and creative effects
Expressive and experiential videographers who enjoy exploring different effects and filters will appreciate the wide selection of effects available with the LEGRIA Mini. Users have the option of manipulating their videos with effects such as fast and slow motion recording, interval recording, video snapshot and touch decoration.
Users looking for a unique and convenient approach to shooting will also appreciate the new scene modes developed for the LEGRIA Mini. Simply select the relevant scene mode (Sports, Food / Fashion & Macro) and scenes captured will be enhanced accordingly.
Mirror Image Recording
Dancers, Golfers and any users looking to use the camcorder as a tool to review their moves will also find the LEGRIA Mini’s mirror image recording and playback function extremely useful.
