Apple Installed Chip to Prevent You from Buying Non Original Lightning Cable

If you are waiting for a third party lightning cable for your new iPhone 5, maybe you should not (after reading this). Apparently, Apple has installed an authentication chip between the V+ contact of the USB and the power pin on the new Lightning plug.

What this means is that if you see something like the lightning cable and it is not from Apple, don’t buy it even though it is cheap. Most probably it will not work on your iPhone 5.

According to report, this chip is difficult to replicate and I doubt that the cost of the 3rd party cable will be cheap with this chip. So, Apple has done it again. They have made a sophisticated product that is simple to use and yet they make life difficult by ensuring that you use only their original product. As of now, on the new iPhone 5: –

  • You can a new lightning port that can only use original lightning cable
  • You use NanoSIM card that I seriously doubt it could save space on the phone but I can confirm it is troublesome at the moment.
  • You ditch Google Maps and come out with Apple Maps which is half-baked at this moment.

While everyone (maker) is trying to set a standard on cable (MicroUSB), Apple is busy setting its standard. The cable is NOT cheap. Original one will set you back by S$28.
