Canon strengthens Cinema EOS System with
4K video capture-capable EOS-1D C DSLR
Optimized filmmaking workflow, high ISO capability and compact form factor make the EOS-1D C the filmmaker’s DSLR of choice
Singapore, 13 April 2012 – Canon Singapore today introduced the EOS-1D C, a digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera targeted at motion picture, television and other digital high-resolution production industries. The compact and lightweight EOS-1D C delivers 4K-resolution video recording to bring today’s demands for visual expression to life.
“The advancements in DSLR technology have not only given imaging professionals the ability to capture beautiful still images, it has also equipped the video production industry with a high-grade video recording device,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore. “The EOS-1D C represents Canon’s commitment to constantly pushing the boundaries of imaging equipment, and users of the EOS-1D C have armed themselves with a physically compact yet digitally powerful machine for capturing industry-grade motion pictures.”
Flexibility in Video Recording
The EOS-1D C supports a variety of video recording options to meet the high-level needs of filmmakers and other video recording professionals. It records 4K resolution video (4,096 x 2,160 pixels) at a frame rate of 24p, with 8-bit Motion JPEG compression, cropped to an APS-H-equivalent angle of view. It can also record Full HD video (1,920 x 1,080 pixels) at a maximum frame rate of 60p, answering the demanding needs of industry professionals. By combining the camera with Canon’s wide range of more than 60 EF lenses and EF Cinema lenses, designed to maximize the EOS series, professionals will be able to achieve exceptional quality with moving images.
Low-Light Capability and Compact Form
Equipped with an 18.1MP, 35mm full frame CMOS sensor, and powered by the Dual DIGIC 5+ processor used in the EOS-1D X, the EOS-1D C features an expanded ISO sensitivity range of up to 25,600 when shooting video, for exceptional imaging results with reduced noise, even in low light. This also helps to minimize lighting costs and save space on-set that is normally occupied by lighting equipment. The camera’s compact body design also allows for great mobility within the set, enabling video capture in confined settings such as the interior of a car, while making transportation and storage a much easier task. Peripheral equipment such as rails and cranes can also afford to be smaller in size, making possible smoother handling and reduced costs on-set.
Optimized Workflow In-Production and Post-Production
The EOS-1D C offers an efficient workflow, both during production and in post-production, that is highly compatible with those used in high-level production industries. The camera records all video, including 4K, directly to the inserted CF card without having to use peripheral equipment such as external storage devices, bringing increased mobility to its user. When required, captured video (excluding 4K video) can be output to an external recorder via an HDMI terminal, using an uncompressed YCbCr 4:2:2 signal.
For motion-picture productions, the camera incorporates a Super 35mm crop function, enabling video to be recorded in the industry-standard 35mm angle of view. The Canon Log Gamma enables the recording of high-quality video with rich gradation expression, producing the impressive image quality required in motion-pictures by minimizing both shadow detail loss and highlight detail loss while retaining a high level of color-grading freedom.
A Suite of Software to Complement the Production Process
The EOS-1D C ships with software applications such as EOS Utility and Picture Style Editor. EOS Utility allows a whole host of camera operations to be controlled via a PC, while the Picture Style Editor allows users to edit and register customized image settings in the camera. These two applications enable real-time processes such as editing the picture style and confirming results on a monitor instantly to be done during set up or even on the shooting set, increasing production efficiency. Exclusive playback software that ships with the camera allows 4K/Motion JPEG and Full HD video at 60p shot on the EOS-1D C to be output on an external monitor* with no loss in image quality. It also enables video shot with the Canon Log Gamma to be output on a monitor with video gamma applied.
* requires the use of a PC equipped with an SDI port
Stellar Still Image Capabilities
The EOS-1D C maintains the same exceptional still-image performance as the Canon EOS-1D X, with an ISO sensitivity range of 100 – 51,200. With the Dual DIGIC 5+ processor, the camera delivers high-precision AE and AF performance, with a high continuous shooting speed of up to 12fps, and achieving 14fps when recording JPEG images with the mirror raised during shooting.
Pricing & Availability
The EOS-1D C will be available from end October this year. Its list price will be confirmed at a later date.
