In 2009, I blogged about OLPC (One Laptop Per Child) XO-3 and from my source, it did mention that it will be available in 2012. Now, 2012 is here and at CES, we might really see the long awaited OLPC XO-3.
Totally unlike the concept picture we saw in 2009, it is still nice to know that they have kept their promise on a 2012 release.
Some information on the XO-3.
- It has a 8-inch screen (1024 pixel by 768 pixel)
- Screen in traditional or e-paper display (Pixel Qi)
- It might come in Android Honeycomb and/or Linux OS.
- Has a Marvell 1 GHZ PXA618 processor, 512Mb RAM
- Internal battery can last up to 10 hours.
- Can charge battery using hand crank (10 minutes of runtime after 60 secs of cranking).
- Rugged design and the screen of the tablet can be covered with a flexible material
- Cost: Under US$100 for standard screen (above US$100 for Pixel Qi screen)
The tablet is for bulk sales to representatives of countries and not for individual consumers. This makes sense as the original objective of the project is to support the children in 3rd world or poor countries and to allow them to have means of owning a simple laptop/tablet.
