The Start of Data Price War in Singapore

Update 1: Share this: bit.ly/datapricewar

Update 2: StarHub has responded. Check out their offer

With the IT Show starting tomorrow, it seems to be a good week to introduce something new. I believe that is what some Telcos are thinking. From my observation, it started with MyRepublic who is aggressively vying to be Singapore’s 4th Telco. They started asking consumers (potential future customers) on which plan they would like if there is a chance they become the 4th Telco.

They have two subscription plans. It seems innocent enough but on their plan, there is an unlimited plan that, at this moment, no current telcos are providing. This is actually what every consumers have been hoping for, an unlimited data plan.

Not sure if this kind of plan is sustainable. Recently, a telco (in Australia) offered a free unlimited data for a day as a kind of compensation for an outage, and they saw 1,841 terabytes of data downloaded for that day alone.

Back to MyRepublic’s plan. At just S$80, customers can get unlimited 4.5G network speed. That is just insane. It has created a buzz online. Almost at the same time (or a day later), Singtel offered a new add-on subscription, DataX2, which will bump up your data limit by two times (e.g. 3GB becomes 6GB) at a flat rate of just S$5.90. But I don’t think Singtel wanted to start a price war.

Unfortunately (and fortunately for consumers), like it or not, the Data Price War has erupted. Today, M1 announces that they are also doubling their data at a monthly fee of  S$5.90. It doesn’t even have a name on this new upsize.

So, based on the table, some customers will be able to get 25GB of data from today.

Upsized Data is available only at point of new line sign-up or re-contract on eligible Data Bundled mobile plans with 2-year handset contract. For Upsized Data sign-ups from 10 to 31 March 2016, the Upsized Data bundle will be available for use and billed from 1 April 2016.

Now, data in Singapore has become a lot cheaper suddenly. I am still waiting for StarHub to respond. Hopefully, I can get an official statement from them. In the meanwhile, all consumers should rejoice and embrace this Data Price War 🙂 .

PS: This is the kind of WAR I like
