Microsoft has Big Plans for SkyDrive (Video)

Just yesterday, I was reading a blog post about a leaked pricing on Microsoft SkyDrive. Today, the Building Windows 8 blog shows an extensive introduction on what you can expect for SkyDrive on Windows 8.

For the benefit of those who do not know what is SkyDrive, it is a free storage (25GB) from Microsoft with your Windows Live ID. It is integrated to Windows Phone and can be accessed via the web.

Just last year, Microsoft put focus on Skydrive web access with a revamped on the UI. And recently, it has even create SkyDrive app for WP7 and iOS.

Many of these actions indicate that Microsoft is not going to be easily outdone by cloud storage solution like Dropbox, Sugarsync, Insync, Bitcasa and etc.

With the recent leak on storage pricing on SkyDrive and also the focus on SkyDrive on Windows 8, I am sure that we will soon hear or see more about integration of SkyDrive to other apps.

Here is a leaked pricing on SkyDrive.

According to the source, the pricing in USD are: –

  • +20GB for $11/yr
  • +50GB for $27/yr
  • +100GB for $54/yr

These pricing may not be the cheapest (Insync with Google storage is about half the price). After reading the blog post about Windows 8, I feel that future cloud storage is not just about storing of your files. It is about utilizing the storage files in as many ways as possible.

For Microsoft, they have already set a plan to integrate SkyDrive in Windows 8 and Windows Phone in the early development. It seems that they are already pushing themselves away from the usual cloud storage solution.
