Samsung Seeks to Maintain Growth in Southeast Asia/Oceania/Taiwan

through the Smarter Life at 2011 Regional Forum

New products and technologies from Samsung’s Television, Digital Camera, Smart Mobile Device, IT Solution and Home Appliance businesses outline 2011 Strategy

SINGAPORE – March 7, 2011 – With an eye toward continued growth in one of its most dynamic regions, Samsung Electronics outlined its Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Taiwan strategy today at the second annual Samsung Regional Forum. In the process, Samsung’s regional leadership unveiled the company’s exciting array of products, all of which contribute to providing the Samsung consumer with the path to the Smarter Life.

Innovations in Internet-connected smart TVs, Blu-ray players, 3D accessories consumer-inspired digital cameras and the latest mobile technology combined with plans for developing Samsung’s regional market presence in B2B, laptops, printers and digital imaging were laid out in the context of Samsung’s unifying principle – the Smarter Life.

Before a crowd of media and partners, Regional Director of Trade Marketing Stanley Goh defined the pillars of the Smarter Life: Smart Design, Smart Experiences and Smart Connections.

  • Smart Design – Creates intuitive designs that increase functionality for consumers
  • Smart Experiences – Provide a wide variety of applications, games and programming delivered on a broad range of platforms through bright and dynamic screens
  • Smart Connections – Allow Samsung devices to automatically connect to each other, sharing content and enhancing user experiences

Southeast Asia, Oceania and Taiwan achieved 11 percent growth in 2010, contributing to Samsung’s US$135.8 billion in global revenues, the most successful in the company’s history. The company’s regional market leadership in televisions grew to 25 percent while it moved into the No. 2 position in mobile phones, refrigerators and washing machines. Samsung will look to challenge the No. 1 position in those markets and others throughout 2011, working with its partners to establish an Optimal Distribution Network to enhance its channel and retail programs.

“We will place additional emphasis on our flagship products and customer marketing in 2011 to continue strengthening our presence in the region, especially in emerging countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam,” Goh said. “The key to success is optimizing both our premium and mass market lineups while also being a leading innovator in key areas such as smart TV, tablet and IT products.”

Creating the Future of Home Entertainment

As the television becomes the centerpiece of technology in the living room and entertains consumers in increasingly more unique and personal ways, Samsung aims to strengthen and simplify its product features to create a connected, intuitive TV experience. Samsung’s new narrow bezel design, flagship LED TV series, and its new “Smart Hub” feature are employed across 2011 LED TV and Blu-ray products, and Samsung’s groundbreaking 3D and TV accessories seamlessly accomplish this in 2011.

Samsung has re-designed the TV screen by slimming down the bezel to 0.2 inches in its flagship LED televisions—the Samsung D8000 and D7000 LED TV. By virtually eliminating the traditional TV frame, Samsung’s ultra-narrow bezel provides consumers with extra screen size without increasing the outside dimensions of the set. Additionally, the Samsung D8000 Plasma Series showcases Samsung’s Plasma+1 design and have 51 and 64-inches of viewable screen size.

In addition to superior design features, Samsung has incorporated advanced Smart TV features to enhance consumers’ entertainment. Samsung’s Smart Hub is a simple menu system used to connect, discover and enjoy a wide range of content. Users can easily search for movies, shows and videos via online services and across connected devices, browse the Web from their TVs and access a wide variety of apps from Samsung Apps, the world’s first application store for the television. Samsung‘s 2011 TVs above LED D5500 series and PDP D6900 will offer Smart TV features.

The Southeast Asia, Oceania and Taiwan region will also see several other visual display and home entertainment innovations from Samsung this year, including:

  • Blu-ray Players—The flagship BD-8900A features smart Blu-ray features, advanced 3D playback, and 1TB of HDD to hold up to 240 hours of recorded HD content
  • Blu-ray Home Theater Systems—The HT-C6750WK is Samsung’s next-generation system with a built-in karaoke feature, featuring 3D Sound that synchs audio and video to create an immersive experience in which the sound ‘moves’ with the 3D picture. The HT-C6750WK also packs full 1080p HD playback of Blu-ray discs and 3D content into a powerful 1,330 watt, 7.1 channel system and features Samsung’s Crystal Amplifier plus technology to offer incredibly pure sound.
