You Can Now Officially Use Same WhatsApp on Multiple Phones

Written by Joe Teh on April 26, 2023

This might be great news for users or business owners who use WhatsApp for communication. WhatsApp is rolling out a new feature that allows you to connect your WhatsApp account to multiple phones.

Based on the information, it will be rolled out in the coming weeks. With this feature, you can have your WhatsApp on Android and iPhone altogether.

Do note that there will always be a primary phone and the WhatsApp must be active within 14 days period. if not, your companion phone will be logged out.

Here is how to link the phones together.

Link an Android companion phone to your Android primary phone or iPhone primary phone

  1. Download WhatsApp on the Android companion phone you want to link. Open WhatsApp and tap AGREE AND CONTINUE.
  2. Tap More options (3 dots) > Link to existing account. You’ll see a QR code to be scanned by your primary phone.
  3. Open WhatsApp on your primary phone.
    • Android: Tap More options (3 dots) > Linked devices > Link a device.
    • iPhone: Go to WhatsApp Settings > Linked Devices > Link a Device.
  4. Unlock your primary phone:
    • If your device has biometric authentication, follow the on-screen instructions.
    • If you don’t have biometric authentication enabled, you’ll be prompted to enter the pin you use to unlock your phone.
  5. Scan the Android companion phone QR code with your primary phone.

Note:

  • Live location and add status features aren’t supported on companion phones.
  • Your companion phones will be logged out if you don’t use your primary phone for over 14 days.
  • Successfully linked companion phones will show “This is a linked device. Learn more” in Settings.

Here is the official information from WhatsApp.

Last year, we introduced the ability for users globally to message seamlessly across all their devices, while maintaining the same level of privacy and security.

Today, we’re improving our multi-device offering further by introducing the ability to use the same WhatsApp account on multiple phones.

A feature highly requested by users, now you can link your phone as one of up to four additional devices, the same as when you link with WhatsApp on web browsers, tablets and desktops. Each linked phone connects to WhatsApp independently, ensuring that your personal messages, media, and calls are end-to-end encrypted, and if your primary device is inactive for a long period, we automatically log you out of all companion devices.

Linking phones as companion devices makes messaging easier. Now you can switch between phones without signing out and pick up your chats where you left off.  Or if you’re a small business owner, additional employees are now able to respond to customers directly from their phones under the same WhatsApp Business account.

This update has started rolling out to users globally and will be available to everyone in the coming weeks.

Also rolling out over the coming weeks, we’re introducing an alternative and more accessible way to link to companion devices. Now you can enter your phone number on WhatsApp Web to receive a one-time code, which you can use on your phone to enable device linking, rather than having to scan a QR code. We look forward to introducing this feature to more companion devices in the future.
