Thanks to vivo, I was able to take a first look at the latest vivo X50 Pro that will be reaching Singapore soon (in August). This is my first encounter with a smartphone that has a built-in Gimbal for stabilization.
If you are familiar with EIS (Electronic Image Stabilization) or OIS (Optical Image Stabilization), this is the next level. The built-in gimbal has 3-axis degree of freedom and really interesting to see how the lens move.
BTW, 2 devices will be launched in Singapore in August. They are the vivo X50 and the vivo X50 Pro 5G. More details on the pricing and availability date below.
PS: If you have read about the X50 Pro Plus, it will not be launched here yet. vivo will decide whether to launch the device here or not based on the market situation.
This is my first look at the device.
I did not spend a lot of time with it yet. However, I took some time to check out the main camera with the built-in gimbal. If you want to see how the lens move with the gimbal, check this video.
For your information, here is the camera setup of the X50 Pro.
It has one 32MP front camera and four cameras on the rear (48MP Main, 8MP Super Wide-Angle, 13MP Professional Portrait, and 8MP 5x Telescopic). I was wrong in my video to state that one of the cameras might be a depth-sensing camera.
BTW, X50 Pro’s 5x Telescopic lens also supports 60x Hyper Zoom. With the gimbal, it is able to take low light.
While shooting with X50 Pro’s main camera, if the smartphone tilts, pans, or rolls, the Gimbal Camera System’s gyroscope will calculate the direction and displacement of the shake. Using electromagnetic forces, the entire gimbal module will move in the opposite direction to compensate for shaking. Throughout this process, the module adjusts its position with a refresh rate of 100Hz to stabilize the frame at all times.
Ordinary stabilization technologies target small-angle shaking, but X50 Pro’s Gimbal Camera System is optimized for motion shaking, making it more useful in real-world user scenarios where stabilization is needed. The Gimbal Camera System uses a double ball cross structure to achieve triple axis rotation, ensuring three-dimensional stabilization and a wide anti-shake area. In contrast, electronic image stabilization (EIS) offers no physical stabilization, using algorithms to crop the frame, while traditional optical image stabilization (OIS) only moves on a two-dimensional axis with an anti-shake angle conversion of ±1°. With traditional OIS, only the center of the frame is stable, but the edges are blurred.
On X50 Pro, since the entire gimbal module moves in all directions to counter shaking, the anti-shake angle conversion reaches more than ±3°, 3-times that of traditional OIS. This ensures that the entire picture is clear without any image distortion or cropping. This enables professional grade photography and videography of life in motion, from sporting events to wildlife scenarios.
There are many things I have not tried with this smartphone. Examples are the supermoon mode or the starry night mode. Here are the description by vivo on how to take a good starry night or a supermoon night.
And here are some pictures on the physical device and what is inside the retail box.
This is the 4-camera configuration – 48MP Main, 13MP Professional Portrait, 8MP Super Wide-Angle, and 8MP 5x Telescopic.
And check out the main camera. It is 4 times bigger than the usual camera, according to vivo.
Here is the 32 MPX front camera.
This is the bottom view. It has the nano SIM card slot, microphone, the USB-C port and the speaker grille.
This is the top view. It has a microphone.
Here is the power on button and the volume rocker switch.
There is nothing on this side of the phone.
Honestly speaking, I wish they could build the charger is a little smaller. BTW, the charger is capable of rapid charging (FlashCharge 2.0) but only at 33W. In the market, competitors are providing faster charging solutions for their flagship models.
Here is what is inside the retail box.
