21st Year Running For Cancer Research – A Celebration of Life and a New Milestone
Run For Hope 2013 flags off at 7am, 17 November 2013 at The Promontory @ Marina Bay
Singapore, 19 August, 2013 – Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and Regent Singapore, together with the National Cancer Centre Singapore (NCCS), today open registrations for this year’s 3.5/10km charity run. Run For Hope 2013 is set to take place in the scenic surrounds of Marina Bay, starting and finishing at the Promontory on Sunday, 17 November.
The two Four Seasons hotels are celebrating 21 years of supporting cancer research through their annual charity run. To mark this milestone, the organisers hope to hold their largest event yet. Since the inaugural run in 1993, Run For Hope has become one of Singapore’s largest charity runs raising awareness and support for cancer research. This will be the sixth year that NCCS is the beneficiary. The 2012 event saw more than 10,000 runners, raising close to S$450,000. This year, organisers aim to draw 15,000 participants and achieve a target of S$600,000. On event day, participants stand the chance to win some fantastic prizes, including overseas stays at a number of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts.
A non-competitive run with two distance options, Run For Hope continues to draw support across all sectors: the young and the old, individuals, families and groups, clubs and corporate.
Last year’s inaugural Executive Challenge – which saw participation from 10 large corporations and their senior management – will return for 2013. Executives are encouraged to take the lead by registering a corporate team of 20 runners or more as part of their CSR efforts.
Fundraising efforts have already started at both the hotels and to date, over S$3,800 has already been raised by staff, and many more fundraising activities are planned leading up to the November run.
“Since 2008, Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and Regent Singapore have partnered NCCS to raise awareness and funds for the NCC Research Fund and we’re proud to continue doing so,” says Mr. Rizwan Shaikh, Hotel Manager, Four Seasons Hotel Singapore.
He adds, “Run For Hope is a meaningful event for the community to play a significant role in helping cancer patients, and at the same time enjoy a leisurely run through the picturesque Marina Bay area. We would like to encourage as many as possible to participate in this year’s run, whether individually, with families, friends, colleagues, associations, or clubs.”
“We are absolutely thrilled to be able to continue the relationship we started with Four Seasons Hotel Singapore and Regent Singapore in 2008, and we hope that this year’s run for cancer research will be the most successful event yet,” says Dr Tan Hiang Khoon, Director for Division of Community Outreach and Philanthropy at NCCS.
“The Run For Hope has grown into a significant platform raising awareness and funds that go a long way to enabling NCCS researchers and clinician-scientists to carry out their remarkable work in cutting edge research highly relevant to our community. In the last 5 years, about $20 million dollars have gone to fund more than 60 worthwhile cancer research projects aimed at cancers relevant to our community and benefiting patients through better treatment outcomes. A number of them have grown into large-scale projects involving established research and medical institutions and winning internationally acclaimed accolades,” adds Dr Tan, who is also a surgical oncologist.
