Samsung might be unveiling a smartwatch (GALAXY Gear) just before IFA on 4th September, together with the GALAXY Note III during their Samsung Unpacked event in Berlin. Bloomberg mentioned that it got the news of the smartwatch from 2 people familiar with the matter. According to the source, the smartwatch will not sport a flexible screen.
From TechCrunch, it mentions that the GALAXY Gear might will be running on Android and “sounds like” it can work independently instead of pairing with a phone to make calls, browse the web, send and receive emails and more.
It seems like phone manufacturers are now interested in the smartwatch recently. I believe Sony is one of the first major companies that introduces smartwatch to the masses (Sony SmartWatch and SmartWatch 2). The other is Pebble, a crowdsource project that saw big success. Apple is supposedly to introduce a smartphone (iWatch?) this year but there is no other information.
I guess as smartphones’ screen get bigger, manufacturers will think of other ways to make life easier for consumers. Smartwatch seems to fit this gap.
