Canon releases two new EF lenses including the versatile EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM for its premium “Luxury” range

The improved EF35mm f/2 IS USM allows for sharp,
high-quality images even at low shutter speeds

SINGAPORE, 8 January 2013 – Canon today announced the launch of two new EF lenses, the lightweight EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM standard-zoom lens that supports macro photography with improved reliability and durability as well as the EF35mm f/2 IS USM wide-angle fixed-focus lens which now has a brand-new image stabilising function.

“Photographers on-the-go will appreciate the new EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM for its portability and versatility, making it a useful companion for a wide range of photographic endeavours. The new EF35mm f/2 IS USM is capable of shooting video clips with minimal noise. This makes it another practical addition to one’s stable of lenses as it can be used in almost all situations, expanding the creative horizon of users,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore.

EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM

The latest entry into Canon’s famed L (luxury)-series, the top-of-the-line range favoured for their superior image quality and robust design, the EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM is an ideal lens for both professional and amateur photographers. It supports wide-angle, standard and mid-range zoom as well as macro photography, allowing users to capture various subjects across a wide range of settings.

The lens becomes a full-fledged macro lens by setting the zoom ring to macro at the telephoto end, allowing users to take close-up shots of small objects such as flowers and insects. In this mode, the lens has a minimum focus distance of 0.2m, working distance of 3 cm, and a maximum magnification of 0.7x. The lens also incorporates the Hybrid IS function which helps stabilise images during macro shooting. This ensures minimal blur even when shooting subjects up close. As with all L-lenses, it
also features full-time manual focusing to help photographers capture the desired shot.
The EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM employs 2 types of lenses to reduce aberrations, delivering high-resolution and high-imaging performance throughout the entire zoom range. With optimal lens positioning and coatings, the standard-zoom lens minimises the incidence of ghosting and flare.

Canon has improved the reliability and durability of the EF24-70mm f/4L IS USM. Its construction is dust-proof and drip-proof, making it suitable for use in harsh environments. The foremost and rearmost lenses’ surfaces are also treated with a fluorine coating which protects the lenses against dust adhesion and also makes lens cleaning easier. A zoom ring lock also protects the lens from accidentally extending while being carried.

At only 93mm long and weighing a mere 600g, the lens boasts a compact and lightweight design making it more comfortable to use.

EF35mm f/2 IS USM

The new EF35mm f/2 IS USM incorporates an image stabilisation function that corrects for hand shake, a feature that is particularly valuable when using slow shutter speeds. The lens realises image stabilisation equivalent to approximately four shutter-speed stops*.

Canon’s EF35mm f/2 IS USM employs a glass mold (GMo) aspherical lens element that reduces various aberrations, including curvature of field, producing highly expressive results not seen in its predecessor. Flare and ghosting is reduced via a carefully-designed lens arrangement and coatings. Its wide f-stop is highly suitable for portrait shots, and an eight-blade circular aperture produces beautiful background blur.

With the rising trend of using DSLRs for video-recording, Canon has made the EF35mm f/2 IS USM ideal for video-shooting by using a micro-step drive control for the aperture mechanism so that it operates silently. The image stabiliser is also intelligent enough to distinguish a still shot from a panning shot, and will select the optimal IS mode for the scene.

*Based on a shutter speed of 1/focal length seconds, a formula considered the limit to prevent hand shake during hand-held photography.

New Lens Front Cap (Model no. E-58II, E-67II, E-72II, E-77II, E-82II)

Together with the above lenses, Canon has also introduced a new lens cap design for its EF lenses. The grip is now positioned in the middle of the cap instead of at the rim. With this new design, photographers who use lens hoods will find it easy to don and doff their lens caps.
