A few weeks ago, Canon announced EOS 6D in Photokina. Now, it has finally sent out the Press Release on this Full Frame DSLR that is touted the lightest around. It will be available from End-November but there is no news of the pricing.
Here is the official Press Release.
Canon Releases the World’s Lightest Full-frame DSLR Camera
The EOS 6D houses features new to Canon’s EOS range, including built-in Wi-Fi, GPS support, and remote capture via smartphones
SINGAPORE, 5 October 2012 – Canon is proud to announce the launch of the EOS 6D, the world’s lightest1 digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera, for photography enthusiasts looking for an affordable full-frame image control and capturing experience. Equipped with a 20.2-megapixel 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor with a precise 11-point Auto-Focus (AF) system, the EOS 6D is also the first EOS-series camera that offers built-in Wi-Fi and GPS support.
“With consumers’ increasing knowledge about advanced photography, we observed that they are recognising the benefits of having a full-frame sensor which is capable of producing images with shallower depth of field, more details and less noise,” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore. “The EOS 6D will enable more consumers to appreciate the merits of full frame photography with its affordability and feature-packed package.”
Superior image quality with high AF and exposure accuracy
Photographers will have greater control over depth of field in portraits, allowing photographers to easily isolate their subjects with attractive background blur with its 35mm full-frame CMOS sensor. The image sensor captures more light per pixel than other smaller sensors, keeping noise level low even when images are shot using high ISO speeds. The EOS 6D offers a maximum ISO speed of 25600, which can be extended up to 102400, producing sharp, high-quality pictures especially in low-light environments.
The EOS 6D is also capable of fast and accurate AF performance, thanks to a new 11-point AF system. These 11 points boast of accurate focusing even in low light up to EV -3 rating (the first and lowest in the EOS range) for sharper photos. The AF sensor is operational with lenses with an aperture of f/5.6 or faster; it delivers an even more accurate focus with lenses with an aperture of f/2.8 or faster. Moreover, exposure control in the EOS 6D is made incredibly precise due to a metering system called iFCL (Focus Color Luminance), which has a 63-zone dual layer metering sensor. After the AF system speedily determines the location of the main subject, this Automatic Exposure (AE) system then takes over to determine the optimal exposure setting for that subject. With both the AF and AE capabilities working in tandem, users will be able to take images that are sharp, focused, and with the desired level of brightness as per settings in the camera. Moreover, the high-performing DIGIC 5+ processor enables the EOS 6D to reach maximum continuous shooting speeds of up to 4.5 frames per second (fps).
Built for sharing
The first ever EOS to feature integrated Wi-Fi connectivity, the EOS 6D enables photographers to share their work immediately after shooting. Images can be wirelessly transferred to external storage devices, uploaded to Facebook and YouTube, or printed wirelessly using a Canon Wi-Fi enabled printer. Alternatively, movies and images can be viewed on DLNA-enabled HDTVs – enabling high-quality, big-screen viewing. By wirelessly connecting to a smartphone with the new iOS and Android-supported EOS Remote app, photographers can also remotely control the camera, adjusting shooting settings and focus before remotely triggering the shutter and viewing the captured image. Furthermore, after the picture is taken, it can also be downloaded straight to the iOS and Android-supported devices for viewing or sharing.
The built-in GPS function will help photographers build a more complete record of their trip by using the GPS logger function to track their route, which can be displayed using the supplied Map Utility software. Photos can also be geotagged with GPS data.
Improved Full HD movies
Beautiful videos capture is also possible with the power of the DIGIC 5+ image processor. The EOS 6D can take high-quality videos at Full HD quality with sharp resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 at a smooth 24 fps. Other movie compression methods are available, including ALL-I to compress each frame (ideal for frame specific editing), and IPB for higher compression and lower file sizes.
The image quality of the EOS 6D’s videos has been improved by the reduction of moire and color fringing. Users can shoot videos up to 30 minutes depending on memory card capacity.
Light in weight, heavy in features,
At just 680g (body only), this DSLR is easy to handle and convenient to carry around during photo shoots or when on a holiday.
In addition, the EOS 6D is very durable as its magnesium alloy body is dust- and drip-proof, and has a long-lasting shutter unit that is able to withstand 100,000 shutter cycles.
The EOS 6D is full of advanced features to assist photographers in capturing outstanding quality landscapes and portraits. HDR Backlight Control mode enables the capture of both highlights and low lights in tricky lighting conditions, while the Multiple Exposure Shots function allows photographers to combine up to nine separate exposures into a single image in-camera, creating a dramatic effect in the final picture. A silent drive mode offers a more subtle option for shooting candid portraits or weddings, and a single axis electronic level accessed through the viewfinder or via the LCD screen, ensures that horizons are level during image composition.
Optional battery grip
The optional BG-13 battery grip is also available, specifically designed to be used with the EOS 6D for both portrait and landscape-oriented shots. The BG-13 uses 6 AA batteries to supplement the main battery power.
Pricing and availability
The EOS 6D is available at authorised dealers from end November. Pricing will be advised at a later date.
