Canadian Man Passed Through Custom with Scanned Passport on iPad

I cannot believe that the custom actually allows this man to pass through custom to enter US using his trustworthy iPad with a scanned copy of his passport.

This person, Martin Reisch, decided to go to US (from Canada) to send some Christmas presents. However, he forgot to bring his passport. Instead of turning back, he took the chance to show his scanned passport on iPad.

Surprisingly, the custom allowed him to pass through. This is what he said: –

I thought I’d at least give it a try. He took the iPad into the little border hut. He was in there a good five, six minutes. It seemed like an eternity. When he came back he took a good long pause before wishing me a Merry Christmas.

From TNW,

According to US law, Canadians must present original passports or enhanced driver’s licenses when trying to gain entrance. The law doesn’t include accepting copies or scans of these documents, and certainly doesn’t cover ones stored on iOS devices.

So, I guess this custom officer should be getting himself in hot soup now since the news is spreading via Internet. Good luck to him.
