Seriously speaking, I have not ever use my Hotmail account before. Now, it seems that Microsoft has revamped it to make it more “humanized”.
That is why, when I got to know this feature, I had a hard time to find it. Anyway, what is important is that if you found an email from a friend that you think it might not be sent from this friend, you can raise the alarm to Hotmail by marking the mail as “My friend’s been hacked!”
What will happen is a serious of actions by Hotmail.
When you report that your friend’s account has been compromised, Hotmail takes that report and combines it with the other information from the compromise detection engine to determine if the account in question has in fact been hijacked. It turns out that the report that comes from you can be one of the strongest “signals” to the detection engine, since you may be the first to notice the compromise. So, when you help out this way, it makes a big difference!
Once we mark the account as compromised, two things happen:
- First and foremost, the account can no longer be used by the spammer.
- When your friend attempts to access their account, they’re put through an account recovery flow that helps them take back control of the account.
Another useful feature is for Junk emails. I am sure get tons of them. So, if the filter is not good enough, those junk mails might find its way to the inbox. According to the information, you can move it to the junk folder and also inform Hotmail that you think this person email account has been hacked. (I tried to find this feature but could not find it.)
