YAHOO! REVEALS TOP TRAVEL SEARCHES FOR SUMMER
Singapore ranks as the most searched travel destination in APAC
Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan trail in overseas destination searches
SINGAPORE, June 2, 2011 – With the summer holidays just around the corner, travel season has finally arrived. According to Yahoo! Search Trends, holiday makers are searching for their favorite destinations, both local and overseas, and planning their vacation by looking for accommodation.
Yahoo! editors have meticulously aggregated searches from across Asia Pacific to reveal the most popular destinations searched during April 2011, as well as collated results from November and April 2010 to offer comparative figures.
According to the recent statistics, based on search query and ranking frequency, Singapore tops the five summer travel destinations, which includes Thailand, Hong Kong, Taiwan and Japan.
The Lion City featured high in search queries from tourists in Philippines, Malaysia Indonesia and India and has remained a popular international destination throughout the three search periods.
Top three overseas destinations for Singaporeans:
Interestingly, in the search results from April 2011, Taiwan featured as the most desirable destination for online users in Singapore, overtaking Bangkok, which had topped the ranking in the two previous search periods.
The Thai capital took second position in the popular overseas destination searches; a place which was secured by Hong Kong in the two previous search periods. In the recently concluded search results, Hong Kong featured in the 10th position behind Thai and Malaysian holiday destinations.
Genting HIghlands ranked as third most searched destination; a spot previously held by Langkawi in November 2010 and by Taiwan in April 2010.
Accommodation preferences:
Accommodation search, another important decision for travel planning, illustrated interesting trends in online users’ travel preferences across the board. While India and Southeast Asia travelers prefer more affordable and economical options, South Korean travelers like boutique hotels and Taiwan and Hong Kong travelers prefer international hotel chains.
In Singapore, the top five searches for hotel accommodation include Marina Bay Sands, Shangri La, Pan Pacific Hotel, Goodwood Park Hotel and Ritz Carlton. These searches varied slightly from those conducted in April 2010 which consisted of Hotel 81, Pan Pacific, Shangri La, Goodwood Park Hotel and Changi Village. (Accommodation related searches were not conducted in November 2010)
Top local points of interest:
Universal Studios, the Hollywood entertainment theme park, topped the local points of interest in Singapore in this year’s search queries followed by Marina Bay Sands and Sentosa. The Integrated Resort was the most searched local spot in the previous two searches last year while Sentosa and Universal Studios ranked second in search results conducted in November and April 2010 respectively.
Some of the other trends that came to light in Asia Pacific include, Korean tourist showing interest in European destinations, resulting in 625% spike; Taiwanese travel searches for Thailand increasing by 148.57%; and Indian visitors more likely to travel within APAC region.
Henryl Moreno, Manager, Editorial for Search & Platforms in Southeast Asia indicated, “The global economy has recovered and thus stimulated higher travel demand. The volume of key word searches consolidated by Yahoo! APAC has increased by 121% on average and is clear evidence that travel demand has rebounded.”
