Spira Foam Car May Help Save a Few Lives and Money

Spira Foam Car is light weight at around 300 pounds. The frame is made of reinforced foam. So, it might be a live saver if someone is hit by it. However, if it is hit by a heavy vehicle, I don’t think it can withstand much of the impact.

In my opinion, the Spira looks more like a scooter than a car. In fact, if you read through the website, you will realize that it started with a motorcycle frame and evolved from there. It is quite efficient

  • 100 MPG (42km/liter)
  • +6-inches foam (15 cm)
  • 137 kg
  • 113km/hr

From FastCompany,

According to Autobloggreen, the three-wheeled vehicle features a plastic coreboard frame coated with epoxy fiberglass and covered with covered by polyurethane foam, which is the same material used to make Crocs. Spira also comes with a  Ninja 250 Kawasaki engine, tandem seating, handlebar steering, pedal-operated hydraulic brakes, and cameras to replace traditional mirrors.

BTW, did I mention that it can foam in water?

So, how much does it cost and when can you buy one? From Spira4U website,

Until we have a firm price and delivery we do not want take money for orders.  We estimate that the earliest production 3 wheel Spiras will be produced in mid 2011 and cost about 100,000 Baht ($3,000 USD) in Thailand.  Taxes, insurance, and legal will probably raise the price to $5,000 in the USA and Europe.  The first 500 vehicles are reserved for rental testing fleets and charity auctions.
