Introducing the New Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0

Kaspersky takes integrated protection for smartphones to a whole new level

Singapore – 25 August 2009 – Kaspersky Lab, a leading developer of secure content-management solutions, announces the release of Kaspersky Mobile Security (KMS) 8.0 – designed to protect smartphones from all types of IT threats, as well as confidential data leaks from lost or stolen devices.

Featuring cutting-edge technologies, the new version of Kaspersky Mobile Security provides an unprecedented level of protection against the wide range of threats facing smartphone users.

“Kaspersky’s new mobile-security software protects users from threats beyond cybercrime.  Apart from its encryption and anti-spam functions, the product also prevents user data from falling into the wrong hands, regardless of whether it is stolen or misplaced.  The Anti-theft module of Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 makes it possible for the owner of a lost or stolen smartphone to remotely block access to or completely wipe the memory of the device by simply sending a codeword via SMS to the user’s number.  Furthermore, the product allows users to locate missing or stolen phones via Global Positioning System (GPS).  After sending an SMS with a password to the lost device, the user receives a link to Google Maps containing its exact coordinates,” said Gun Suk Ling, Managing Director of Kaspersky Lab for Southeast Asia.

If the SIM card is removed from a lost or stolen phone, the SIM-Watch module in Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 sends a hidden message notifying the owner of the new number.  This function allows the owner to delete data from or block the smartphone to prevent data exposure to unwanted third parties.  In addition, law enforcement agencies can use the new number to track the stolen device and return it to its rightful owner.

Users can now benefit from the added level of security that Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 offers.  With the new software, users are able to store their sensitive and confidential data in safe folders that are permanently encrypted and accessible only with a user-defined password.  When the password is entered, the folder will remain accessible to enhance usability until KMS detects a period of inactivity.

Furthermore, the parental control component – new to Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 – allows parents to restrict the sending and receiving of messages to a child’s phone (e.g. premium-rate numbers, adult-content services, etc.).  The product’s SMS-Find function also allows parents to locate their children if their smartphones have GPS.

Kaspersky Mobile Security 8.0 also includes an improved Anti-spam module.  The spam filter blocks unsolicited messages and calls, protecting users from fraudsters and obtrusive advertising.  The new version of Kaspersky Mobile Security can function in whitelist mode (only accepting calls and messages from specified contacts) or in blacklist mode (accepting calls and messages from all numbers except those in the list).

KMS 8.0 provides a best-of-breed anti-virus scanner along with an integrated firewall that prevents attacks by hackers and mobile worms that spread via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi connections.

“The Kaspersky Mobile Security software’s anti-virus capabilities are just as effective as Kaspersky Lab’s PC counterparts. Its anti-virus databases are updated automatically upon Internet access or during synchronisation with a PC.  This is to also ensure that the end user’s mobile device is never at risk of unknown malware, or if any, they are detected and deleted effectively,” Gun concluded.

The new Kaspersky Lab application, offering protection for smartphones, can be installed on all smartphones running Symbian OS 9.1, 9.2 and 9.3 or Windows Mobile 5.0, 6.0 and 6.1.
