iPhone 11 Series Features

iPhone 11 is finally changing the design although it isn’t a lot. Basically, if you follow the leaks, you might already anticipate the new design which focuses mainly on the camera setup.

Let’s dive in on the features.

A13 Bionic Chip

Both the iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro are powered by the A13 Bionic chip. Apple has redesigned the chip to make it more efficient, faster and includes a neural engine.

Here is the performance compared to others in the market.

CPU performance compared to iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy S10+, HUAWEI P30 Pro and Google Pixel 3.

GPU performance compared to iPhone XR, Samsung Galaxy S10+, HUAWEI P30 Pro and Google Pixel 3.

iOS 13

The new iPhone 11 is powered by iOS 13, the latest iOS from Apple (which will be available for iPhone 6s and above from 19th September)

iOS 13 introduces a dramatic new look with Dark Mode, a more private way to sign in to apps and websites with Sign In with Apple, and an all-new Maps experience.

With advanced Camera and Photos features, photo editing is more comprehensive and intuitive with powerful new tools that now extend to video editing. Portrait Lighting adjustments can be made right in the Camera app to adjust the intensity of light on a subject, and a new High-Key Mono effect creates a beautiful, monochromatic look for Portrait mode photos.

Battery

iPhone 11 has a “full-day” battery life of 18 hours. And it has 1 hour more battery when compared with iPhone XR.

iPhone 11 Pro has 4 hours more battery when compared with iPhone Xs.

iPhone 11 Pro Max has 5 hours more battery when compared with iPhone Xs Max.

Camera

This, in my opinion, has the biggest change. The camera module is now a square module that protrudes out. I know some people will not be happy as the camera is not flushed to the back. The iPhone 11 has two cameras while the iPhone 11 Pro has 3 cameras.

iPhone 11 Camera

iPhone 11 Pro camera

If you have been complaining that iPhone cannot handle well in low light, Apple has listened and has added a Night Mode feature into iPhone 11. If set to automatic, it will turn on Night Mode when needed. Check out the contrast with and without Night Mode.

And with the 3 camera setup for iPhone 11 Pro, it has a 4x optical zoom (2x Zoom in and 2x Zoom out).

Check out the Specs of the iPhone 11 Pro rear cameras.

  • Triple 12MP Ultra Wide, Wide and Telephoto cameras
  • Ultra Wide: ƒ/2.4 aperture and 120° field of view
  • Wide: ƒ/1.8 aperture
  • Telephoto: ƒ/2.0 aperture
  • 2x optical zoom in, 2x optical zoom out; digital zoom up to 10x
  • Portrait mode with advanced bokeh and Depth Control
  • Portrait Lighting with six effects (Natural, Studio, Contour, Stage, Stage Mono, High-Key Mono)
  • Dual optical image stabilisation (Wide and Telephoto)
  • Five‑element lens (Ultra Wide); six-element lens (Wide and Telephoto)
  • Brighter True Tone flash with Slow Sync
  • Panorama (up to 63MP)
  • 100% Focus Pixels (Wide)

  • Wide colour capture for photos and Live Photos
  • Advanced red‑eye correction
  • Photo geotagging

And to compare, here are the specs of the iPhone 11 rear cameras.

  • Dual 12MP Ultra Wide and Wide cameras
  • Ultra Wide: ƒ/2.4 aperture and 120° field of view
  • Wide: ƒ/1.8 aperture
  • 2x optical zoom; digital zoom up to 5x

  • Optical image stabilisation (Wide)
  • Five‑element lens (Ultra Wide); six‑element lens (Wide)
  • Brighter True Tone flash with Slow Sync

And for the front-facing camera, it has also been upgraded. Apple called it the TrueDepth Camera. One of the interesting features about this camera is the slo-mo mode, which Apple called it the Slofie.

Left: iPhone 11 Pro, Right: iPhone 11

You can check out the full specs of the Apple iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro with the following links.

Lastly, iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro come with 18w charger. In my opinion, competitors are already going towards higher wattage charging capabilities. Apple might be losing out in this area.

And BTW, during the keynote, it was mentioned that Apple iPhone 11 will be updated with a new feature called Deep Fusion for the cameras. Basically, it combines 9 photos to produce a single best photo aid by the neural engine. From the presentation, it mentions that 4 photos will be taken before and after you press the shutter. So, in total, 9 photos will be combined into one. Interesting.

Here are the highlights of the Apple keynote in just 2 minutes. Check it out.

Fastest Performance with the Best Battery Life

A13 Bionic, the fastest chip ever in a smartphone, provides unparalleled performance for every task iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max handle and features up to 20 percent faster CPU and GPU than A12. A13 Bionic is built for machine learning, with a faster Neural Engine for real-time photo and video analysis, and new Machine Learning Accelerators that allow the CPU to deliver more than 1 trillion operations per second. Together, A13 Bionic and iOS 13 make up the best machine learning platform in a smartphone.

All of this compute, graphics and ML performance is delivered while still enabling an unprecedented leap in battery life, with iPhone 11 Pro offering up to four more hours of battery life in a day than iPhone Xs, and iPhone 11 Pro Max offering up to five hours more than iPhone Xs Max.

A Pro Camera System for Everyone

iPhone 11 Pro introduces a transformative triple-camera system with all-new Ultra Wide, Wide and Telephoto cameras, deeply integrated into iOS to create a pro-level camera experience designed for everyone.

iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max set a new standard in video, with the highest quality video ever in a smartphone. Each camera in the triple-camera system records brilliant 4K video with extended dynamic range and cinematic video stabilisation. With a wider field of view and large focal plane, the Ultra Wide camera is great for shooting action videos. Users can easily zoom between each of the three cameras, while Audio Zoom matches the audio to the video framing for more dynamic sound. With iOS 13, powerful video editing tools are accessible to everyone with the ability to rotate, crop, increase exposure and apply filters to videos instantly. These adjustments are easy to apply and review at a glance, so even a novice can create professional quality video projects.

With the tight integration between hardware and software, iPhone 11 Pro and iPhone 11 Pro Max take the traditional camera experience even further in a way only Apple can. The all-new Ultra Wide camera fundamentally changes the camera experience by capturing four times more scene, great for taking landscape or architecture photos, tight shots and more. The new Wide sensor with 100 percent Focus Pixels and advanced software enables Night mode, and delivers huge improvements to photos shot in indoor and outdoor low-light environments, resulting in brighter images with natural colours and reduced noise.

The triple-camera system takes Portrait mode to a new level with the ability to choose Wide and Telephoto framing, enabling Portrait mode with a wider field of view, great for taking portraits of multiple people. The Telephoto camera features a larger ƒ/2.0 aperture to capture 40 percent more light compared to iPhone Xs for better photos and videos.

Next-generation Smart HDR uses advanced machine learning to recognise subjects in the frame and intelligently relight them for more natural-looking images with greater detail. A new True Tone flash is over 30 percent brighter. Deep Fusion, coming later this fall, is a new image processing system enabled by the Neural Engine of A13 Bionic. Deep Fusion uses advanced machine learning to do pixel-by-pixel processing of photos, optimising for texture, details and noise in every part of the photo.
