Self Driving Vehicles to Become Common in Singapore Soon

Singapore is going full steam ahead in autonomous driving or self-driving vehicles. From 1st Dec to 14th Dec, visitors can try out the Auto Riders (which look like a moving toaster) at Gardens By the Bay (GBTB). It can take up to 10 person per trip for a 1.5km loop.

Not only that, Singapore is planning a trial involving freight transport (joint effort by MOT and PSA). I like the concept of “follow the leader” or what they call “autonomous truck platooning system”. One driver will drive a cargo truck with other cargo trucks (driverless) following it. This will definitely help in reducing manpower.

There is also another project in the pipeline that allows visitors to Sentosa to call for a driverless shuttle via smartphone or at specific kiosks across the island. I think Singapore is ready for such technology. Of course, framework and studies have to be discussed and implemented to ensure the safety of commuters and pedestrians.
