Opinion: Are we becoming more sociable or are we not? (video)

As we become more connected via social media, we are becoming more sociable, right? This is what many people think. On Facebook, we look at friends’ update, friends that we seldom meet in real life. And yet we become closer to them just by looking at their news feed. Do you have that kind of feeling?

look-up

You are not alone.

On trains, on walkways, in restaurants, people are always looking at their devices feeling “connected” with the world except to the ones that is around you at that moment. Is that what sociable is all about? I Googled the word “sociable” and it says:

willing to talk and engage in activities with other people; friendly.

So does that mean being friendly on the social media and engaging on daily topics with friends mean you are sociable?

Now, I want you to go back to the time when Facebook or Twitter are not that popular. What did you see? Without devices or platforms to communicate online, did you see more people interacting on the streets, in the public transport as compared to now? Do you miss it? Real talking, real people that we meet face-to-face.

So, what is the actual definition of Sociable?

In both cases, we are talking to friends and engaging in activities, except that one is done in the digital world while the other in the real world.

I believe there are people out there who benefit from the digital kind of social updates. For example, iIn real world, you can only meet limited number of people. On the social media, you are connected to your friends, your colleagues, wife, relatives, overseas friends and etc, all at the same time. When you go overseas, you feel that you are not alone. With your device connected, you know that you can reach out to the social media for help, advices and etc.

Talking about connections, today, I read an article on Sunday Times about using devices on the public transport. This lady is saying that she is connected to 7 groups of friends on WhatsApp while on the train, and she mentioned how else will she be able to connect to 7 groups of people at the same time and get updated instantaneously without the device.

I think the world is starting to lack the human touch. With keyboard warriors hiding behind their computer screen, opinions are lashed out without thinking about the consequences. Birthdays of friends are remembered via your devices.

Watch this video and let me know if you agree with it. BTW, this video is by no way a coincidence that it garner more than 2 million views in a few days. I am sure it reaches out to people in the content.

What do you think? With the advance in technology, are we becoming less sociable or are we becoming sociable in another way? When you meet someone in real life next time, you may find him/her familiar and then you remembered. Oh.. that’s one of my Facebook friends.. and I couldn’t recognize him/her.

Don’t look away. If you are guilty of such, give me a shout… Remember, we are not alone.. but how are we going to face it.. Yes, that is the question..
