Some interesting information on Twitter Alerts (copied from PR agency)

Imagine if you are touring in Japan and an earthquake occurs and you subscribe to one of the organizations (American Red Cross, World Health Organization etc.) who uses Twitter Alerts. With this feature, you will be able to receive a Twitter notification and SMS for accurate and reliable information about the earthquake so you’re better informed which places to avoid.

In a nutshell, Twitter Alerts is a new feature offered to users to provide useful and important messaging during times of crisis- emergency evacuations, natural disasters or when other forms of communications are inaccessible.

How is Twitter Alerts relevant to the user?

A Twitter user may find the Alerts feature useful especially when he/she has families/ friends who are residing at disaster-prone areas. And when other forms of communicating tools become inaccessible, the user may want to find out which areas are the most severely hit or whether the destination will still be a safe decision to travel to.

We have also seen how public service agencies & non-governmental organizations make use of Twitter to share information or make a public announcement. Twitter Alerts can be their alternative option for them to communicate with their followers/ customers during times of crisis. For example, if a governmental organization needs to share information about a imminent haze coming the country’s way, Twitter Alerts can help assist the organization and send out a notification to relevant parties.

Twitter Alerts is opening up a partners program to enroll organizations who wish to provide critical information to the general public in times of crisis. To find out more about the Twitter Alerts program, organizations can access their blog post here.
