Apple introduces 128GB iPad with Retina Display

With stiff competition and higher demand for bigger capacity, Apple today announces the availability of a 128GB iPad model. The new 128GB versions of the fourth generation iPad will be available starting US Tuesday, 5th February, in black or white, for a suggested retail price of SG$1,048 inc. GST for the iPad with Wi-Fi model and SG$1,218 inc. GST for the iPad with Wi-Fi + Cellular model.

This is a move I did not expect. However, it may be a logical and needed move. With more tablets (Android, Windows) in the market, competition is definitely very tight. And Microsoft is going to launch Microsoft Surface Pro on 9th February 2013, Apple might be worried that consumers might shun away iPad to get a higher capacity Surface Pro. The new 128GB iPad launch date is just a few days before Microsoft’s Surface Pro launch. I wonder if it is on purpose.

Two of the advantages of the iPad as compared to the Surface Pro is that it has a rich apps ecosystem and it has LTE/Cellular support. I am sure that some may argue that since Surface Pro is a full OS, there are thousands of application it can be installed. It is true but wait until you read this. Surface Pro has only less than 90GB of storage left and that means there is a limit to the number of software you can install.

Overall, here are some reasons (my opinion) Apple wants to launch a higher capacity model

  • File size of  apps with Retina Display getting bigger.
  • To differentiate iPad mini and The iPad with Retina Display prominently with storage differences.
  • To beat the competition with equal or higher capacity.
