Unmanned Airplane Flies Through Tight Surroundings Without GPS (Video)

Finally,an airplane that do not need GPS as a guide. By using sophisticated sensors on board, it is able to map its area around without knocking into any structure.

BTW, it is flying at a very fast speed in this video and still able to avoid the obstacles. I think it behaves like a bat 🙂 but using different sensing technology.

The Robust Robotics group at MIT has developed a system that enables a fixed wing vehicle to localize in a known map, and fly autonomously using only a 2D laser scanner fused with an IMU. All processing is done onboard the vehicle.
