I guess the time has come that anyone with a smartphone can use mapping service to navigate in a building. Currently, we rely on satellite above our sky and GPS module in our devices to pinpoint our location. With IndoorAtlas solution, you don’t need that anymore. With the help of the magnetometer in your smartphone, you can actually use it to identify your location.
Here is what they mention on your website:
IndoorAtlas Ltd. pioneers magnetic anomaly-based indoor positioning in mobile computing. The core location technology is independent of any external infrastructures such as wireless access points, and no hardware installation is needed.
However, to create an internal map using the technology, it will require some time to create the plan and perform some initial measurements.
Here is how the technology works.
University of Oulu engineers headed by Dr. Janne Haverinen discovered that steel masses inside buildings twist Mother Earth’s magnetic field such that every spot produces a unique pattern. “Each building, floor and corridor creates a distinct magnetic field disturbance that can be measured to identify a location and generate a map,” explains Dr. Haverinen.
Here is a video to show you how it can be done.
