Will Signal App Be the Start of Citizen Journalism?

Signal App is a app that has only one purpose. To tell the stories of the people by the people. This is NOT something new. Recently, many news were reported way earlier than traditional media because of people sharing them in Social Media.

As you can see above, the app is not ready. However, you can request an invitation now. According to TNW, the person behind this app is a Lebanese entrepreneur, Mark Malkoun.

“Signal was definitely inspired by the Arab Spring, and more precisely from a personal desire to get a simple way of seeing what’s happening around you straight from the people.”

In Singapore, we can access to most channels easily. Therefore, I think many Singaporeans will not see a need for such app. In Middle East, where news may be blocked or sanctioned, this app may come handy.

The concept of this app is that readers can vote the news. The most votes will get it to the top news. Therefore, I guess if a news is not accurate, it will quickly be left behind.

Nevertheless, we have to be careful of the news we heard or seen. In some cases, I have seen news being spread without verification. Take for example the recent kidnapping cases in Singapore. Almost all of them are untrue and yet they spread like wildfire across the social networks.

People like news or like to be the first to know the news. And many have forgotten to verify them. Sharing them is as easy as a few clicks of the mouse or on their smartphone.

What do you think? Will this kind of app like Signal be a tool to the people or can be exploited for others to spread false information? Hope to hear your view on it.
