During CES 2012, Toshiba demonstrated a new technology. It uses hardware to allow different devices to “talk” to each other for high speed file transfer.
Of course, it sounds similar to Bluetooth or WiFi transfer except that it does it at super high speed of 560 Mbps (this is the speed on paper) and takes up less juice (according to the source).
It is too early to speculate if this technology will be adopted by others but it is interesting to know that it exists. Watch this video. I am sure you will be impressed.
