This is a pretty nice concept (I thought) initially. However, after reading through and thinking about it, I don’t even think that it is worth trying.
The concept is to use Leica i9 as a “casing” and fit the iPhone 4 (as shown below) into it with the 30-pins connector connected. In this way, the user can use the superb Leica i9 optics and functions for the photo shooting and it will then transfer the pictures, videos into the iPhone 4 via the 30-pins connector. It is touted to have a shelf life of 5 to 10 years.
In this concept, the designer might assume that Apple would not change much on the outlook (shape, size, thickness) of the iPhone. This, in my opinion, is just too optimistic. And moreover, a shelf life for a phone is normally 2 years. So, I think it doesn’t make sense.
The only way for it to make sense is that Leica will built apps with this concept and using the phone processing power as an interface to manipulate the pictures or video.
However, do you think that the iPhone has enough storage capacity for constant shooting given that it could not have external card on it? Seriously, an easy way to merge the best of these two are using Eyefi with the new Direct Mode or ensure that future cameras will have this WiFi transfer function.
When you shoot, it syncs the pictures, videos with the devices and you can change as many devices as you like since all devices nowadays come with WiFi capability. There is NO NEED to worry about the shape of the devices or even the platform it is in.
So, what do you think? Sorry for the rant as I think that this concept is definitely from an Apple fan. Peace.
