Animax and Ani-Mate Alodia take on April (Fool’s) in

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 style!

Singapore, 1 April 2011 – Fans were in for a rude shock when Animax Ani-Mate (channel presenter) and celebrity cosplayer Alodia revealed in a video on her Facebook account that she planned to return to school and quit cosplay. The blogosphere was abuzz, with some fans wishing Alodia all the best in her studies and others trying to dissuade her from quitting cosplay.

However, Ani-Mate Alodia’s decision to stop cosplaying was short-lived as fans found on 1 April — a fresh Facebook video showed her declaring her intention indeed to go back to school – but in cosplay of Haruhi Suzumiya, the titular school-girl character of the well-loved anime series.

As it turns out, Animax had collaborated with Asia’s beloved Ani-Mate to play a practical April Fool’s joke, to promote The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya. The series premieres on the youth entertainment channel on 6 April – and Alodia has no plans at all to give up cosplaying!

In the spirit of the show’s fun-loving protagonist, Animax will telecast the popular anime series that inspired the prank. Animax viewers will also get to watch the entire anime series with Ani-Mate Alodia, who will be online to chat ‘live’ with fans on her Facebook account during each episode.

Premiering 6 April on 8.30pm with subsequent episodes airing Wednesdays at 8pm, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 is a 14-part sequel to the first The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya series from 2006.

The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 is a light-hearted peek into the life of the eponymous high-school student, who unconsciously possesses profound powers that can change, destroy or create a new reality based on her feelings. If allowed to become bored, she is capable of destroying the universe at a whim and without even knowing it.

In the first anime series, Haruhi, who professes to have no interest in ‘ordinary human beings’, sets up her own school club, the SOS Brigade, to search for paranormal beings such as aliens, time-travellers and ‘ESPers’ (beings with extra sensory perception), and to investigate mysteries of the universe. Forced into the club is Kyon, a regular school boy and narrator of the story. Unknown to Haruhi, the three other club members, Yuki, Mikuru and Itsuki, are an extraterrestrial, a time traveller, and an ‘ESPer’, respectively. The trio have been sent by their organizations to observe and entertain Haruhi to keep a lid on her reality-warping powers.

Given the unenviable task of engaging and keeping occupied the easily bored and unpredictable Haruhi, the four friends follow her erratic and amusing day-to-day antics in and out of school to maintain the illusion of a normal life.

There is a twist in the story when Kyon wakes up on the day that they are supposed to return to school and has a déjà vu experience of the activities they enjoyed during the period. Haruhi had inadvertently put the activities of the last two weeks on an infinite loop, and her friends will have to find a way to stop the sequence of events from repeating endlessly…

Produced by Kyoto Animation, the famed studio behind hits such as the K-On! and Lucky Star anime series, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2 features popular voice actress Aya Hirano, the winner of the ‘Best Rookie’ award at Japan’s first Seiyu (Voice Actors) Awards, in the role of Haruhi.

Based on the light novel series of the same title, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya franchise extends far beyond the two anime TV series. A spin-off theatrical anime movie released in 2010 took almost US$7.5 million from the Japanese box office, while seven video games have been released for consoles, including Sony’s PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2 and PlayStation 3, Nintendo’s DS and Wii, as well as on the Apple iPhone and iPad.

Start April on a fun note by joining Ani-Mate Alodia to catch Haruhi and her motley crew of friends in a journey of misadventures in The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya 2, premiering only on Animax.
