Was invited to Canon newest training facility (launched on the 4th March) at Habour Front Tower One. It was called the Canon Imaging Academy or CIA for short. As this is a training facility, the theme for the night was “Back to School”. Nice!
BTW, this is our “Principal”, Mr. Koh. All of us were given a school bag with time-table and stationary. I guess the only differences is that inside this pencil case, we have a 4Gb SD card for our hands on on the latest products.
Here are our good students.
Our “Principal” is very strict. Look at the long ruler he has.
And we still have to take our attendance and pin our name tag.
We were divided into 3 classes. One is on the latest DSLR, another on point and shoot cameras and lastly, the camcorders.
Thankfully, the classroom lessons were not boring at all. Thanks to the nice teachers and the pretty “school girls”.
My first lessons is on Digital cameras like the IXUS and PowerShot series.
In total, there are a total of
- IXUS 310 HS
- IXUS 220 HS
- IXUS 115 HS
- PowerShot SX230 HS
- PowerShot A3300 IS
- PowerShot A3200IS
- PowerShot A2200
- PowerShot A1200
Here are “students” showing off the products.

(Sorry, taken when your eyes are close)
Next, we moved to the next classroom. Actually, my favorite DSLR classroom which has a studio setup ready for students to hands on.
Of course, we were greeted with Canon’s latest products, some of them in prototype or not launched yet.
Here are some of the new products.
Canon EOS DSLR
- EOS 600D
- EOS 1100D
The EOS 1100D is available in red, brown, metallic gray and black, and will ship with matching straps. Here is a picture of the brown EOS 1100D.
EX Speedlite Range
- Speedlite 320EX
- Speedlite 270EX II
The Speedlite 320 EX and 270 EX II will be available at all authorised Canon dealers at $389.00 and $269.00 respectively. One feature that I like about the Speedlite 320 Ex is the availability of an LED light that can act as a video light. See the picture below.
- Super-telephoto EF500mm f/4L IS II USM
- Super-telephoto EF600mm f/4L IS II USM
- Compact EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS
We did not get to see these lenses yet but we did get to see a prototype fish-eye lens. Nice!
As mentioned, we did get some hands on on the studio equipment. Here are the results. I used my own Canon 7D for these shots.
Finally, we moved on to our final class, the Camcorders.
Canon has introduced a series of models for the amateurs to the professionals.
- LEGRIA FS406
- LEGRIA FS46
- LEGRIA HF G10
- LEGRIA HF M400
- LEGRIA HF M41
- LEGRIA HF R26
- LEGRIA HF R28
- LEGRIA HF S30
Out of these camcorders, I like the XA10 and the HF S30
The amazing thing about the XA10 is although it is a professional camera, the handle can be dismantled and the accessories taken out to look like a normal compact camera.
Here is a look at the handle.
I did a short video on it.
That is the end of the class. Hope that you can get a chance to go to CIA for the training too!
