Today, I received some press release from Google on some search trend based on Oscar nominees. It shows that if Oscar is based on search trend, Black Swan will be awarded Best Film. Interesting. More information after the break.
Google announces the 2011 Oscar “winners”
Singapore, 25 February 2011 – If search trends are a sure-fire indicator of Oscar success, then Google will be handing out the Academy Award for Best Film to Black Swan, Natalie Portman will be radiating in her pregnancy glow as she accepts the Best Actress Award, former Batman actor Christian Bale will be giving his Best Supporting Actor speech, Amy Adams will be walking away with Best Supporting Actress and James Franco’s brooding good looks would have landed him the Best Actor award.
Well, at least that’s how it will go if people the world over searching on Google determine the winner for each Oscar category. As expected, the Oscar buzz has been ablaze online over the last month as many movie fans searched for information, reviews and videos of their favourite nominated films and movie stars. Using Google Insights for Search allow us to compare search volume patterns across specific regions, categories, time frames and properties, hence allowing users to check the top and fastest-rising searches for that particular topic. Data can be adjusted according to each country to understand each market’s search behaviour and Oscar preferences as well.
Online searches vs Oscar Critics
This year’s favourites to win “Best Picture of the Year” are The King’s Speech, Black Swan, The Social Network, True Grit, and The Fighter. This graph shows that people are searching for Black Swan much more than any other film, which goes against the predictions of many movie critics.
So who is going to surprise? Will the online popularity of Natalie Portman win over critics’ choice for Best Actress? Or will dark horse James Franco steal the limelight from Colin Firth by taking home the coveted title of Best Actor?
Guess we’ll only know this Monday, when the Oscars are broadcast. Till then, keep searching to find out what the chances are for each of the nominees to win! Here are some graphs we put together using Insights for Search – so do check out who’s leading the pack with the highest volume of search.
