My Encounter with Singtel Blackberry Storm – Video Within

Truthfully speaking, this post may anger some Blackberry fans as I will be talking on user experience on the Blackberry Storm. But I must admit that my judgement is based on 15 minutes of usage on the Blackberry Storm and I seriously don’t think that it is enough. However, many touch so many User Interface, I  am taking reference to those that I have use (also around the same duration)

First look

The BB Storm looks nice and very executive. The edges are rounded and easy to hold. The screen is big. It is not as thin as I thought. BTW, the BB Storm that you see is fresh from Singtel and you can see many plastic protective that is still not taken off.

My first impression is it doesn’t catch my eye.

Different Views of Black Berry Storm

I am surprised to see just a 3.2 MegaPixels camera on the BB Storm. But at least, it comes with a flash. I did not test the quality.

As mentioned, it is quite thick

As you can see, there are 4 physical buttons on the BB Storm. I am surprised that I have to use it so often. It seems that I cannot do without them.

Here is a picture of my Touch HD with Blackberry Storm.

User Interface (UI)

The UI is a let down to me, in my opinion. The very nice that I heard about BB Storm is that it has a very real clicking sound that a soft button is selected. I always thought that it is a Haptic representation of the action. Never in the world that I think that Blackberry really did a button on the screen. Imagine the screen as a  big button.

Seriously, I don’t whether to say that it is a good idea or not. But I keep thinking of the dust that will go inside the side and if the button will really fail me or not.

I have made a video with extra footage on that button, see it at the end of my post.

The UI is also not consistent, in my opinion. Why? Because on some pages, by sliding the finger across, you can actually move from icon to icon. On most menus, it cannot work. I will show you in the video.

Remarks

The first experience is quite short. If you are a Blackberry fans, please, try out Storm at the shop. If you love it, buy it. But it is seriously a different experience from a non-touch screen with Qwerty keyboard to a touch screen without a physical keyboard.

Here is the video that I made.
