Conficker Worm to Evolve on April Fool’s Day

This is not a joke! It is a warning that the Conficker worm (which had previously caused many computers to be infected) will evolve on 1st April 2009. Previously, this Conficker or DownAdUP caused a big stir in the Internet because those infected with it will not feel anything.

Now, threat researcher, Paul Ferguson, who is the Conficker Task Force from Trend Micro says that the worm is programmed to evolve itself on Wednesday, making it more difficult to detect. However, he mentions that there is no indication that it is going into attack mode or dropping a payload on that day. To me, this is a time bomb. Who knows when this worm will do something. Read on after the break.

According to the Straits Times report,

It can infect machines from the Internet or by hiding on USB memory sticks carrying data from one computer to another. Once in a computer it digs deep, setting up defenses that make it hard to extract.

What we can do now is to update our Microsoft Windows with the latest patch and also keep our Anti Virus software updated. In my opinion, try not to be the first to go online on 1st April 2009 🙂
