Canon Introduces the World’s Smallest and Lightest DSLR camera – the EOS 100D – to Meet the Demands of Customers

Along with the EOS 100D, Canon is also introducing the EOS 700D and a new EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM interchangeable lens, ideal for capturing video.

SINGAPORE, 3 April 2013 – Canon has proven its leadership in imaging technology and innovation once again with the world’s smallest and lightest DSLR camera – the EOS 100D. Catered to users who appreciate superb image quality, the flexibility of an interchangeable lens camera and ultra-portability, the EOS 100D features power packed performance in a compact form. Weighing just 370 grams, the lightweight EOS 100D features an APS-C-size 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor and a high-speed DIGIC 5 image processor to deliver both high image quality and high-speed continuous shooting of four frames per second (fps).

“Canon’s consistent investment in research and development has enabled us to find a way to downsize components in the camera while maintaining the high product quality we are renowned for. With its diminutive size and weight, we expect the new EOS 100D to appeal to those who require convenience and portability without compromising on image quality.” said Andrew Koh, Senior Director and General Manager of the Consumer Imaging and Information Products Group, Canon Singapore.

The EOS 100D – Small, light and powerful
Measuring a mere 116.8 (w) x 90.7 (h) x 69.4 (d) mm, the new touch-screen EOS 100D is capable of capturing images with minimum noise and image blur, even in low light conditions. Additionally, the EOS 100D features a maximum ISO speed of 12800 (expandable to ISO 25600) and employs a 9-point Auto Focus (AF) system that ensures subjects remain in focus even if they move off the centre of the image area.

When in Live View mode or movie recording, the newly developed Hybrid CMOS AF II AF system combines high-precision contrast AF and high-speed phase-detection AF, the latter made possible by the camera’s CMOS sensor, enabling high-performance AF across approximately 80% of the image-display area. In Live View mode, Continuous AF ensures rapid focusing at all times, which keeps moving subjects in focus prior to snapping the shutter.

During movie recording, the Movie Servo AF also allows continuous AF tracking of moving subjects. When paired with the new EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM EF-S lens, the EOS 100D delivers smooth and quiet Movie Servo AF performance, attributed to the stepping motor of the lens.

The camera is also equipped with a new Effect Shot function in Creative Auto mode which allows creative users who like to play around with filters to keep a copy of the original photo. So for example, should a user select the monochrome filter for his photos, the camera will produce the black and white photos while automatically retaining the original set of photos in full colour for further editing purposes..

In Playback mode, the EOS 100D has a cropping function which allows photos to be cropped into four aspect ratio sizes, including the popular 4:3 size. Once again, a copy of the original file will be retained even after the photo has been cropped.

With the new EOS 100D comes three new family-oriented scene modes – Kids, Food and Candlelight, which when added to the previous modes such as HDR Backlight Control, Night Portrait and Handheld Night Scene, bring the total number of special-scene shooting modes to six. These modes help to ensure the optimal settings for every situation. Canon has also created a new Background Blur Simulation function in Creative Auto mode to help users achieve an attractive bokeh in their photos. In this mode, the Live View display will simulate the background blur in real-time before the photo is taken. A simple slider interface allows users to adjust the depth-of-field to the desired blur level easily.

The EOS 700D – High performance combined with an intuitive touch-screen capability
Alongside the introduction of the EOS 100D, Canon is also launching the new EOS 700D which incorporates an APS-C size 18.0-megapixel CMOS sensor and high-speed DIGIC 5 imaging processor. The EOS 700D delivers high image quality and high-speed continuous shooting of five fps and a maximum ISO speed of 12,800 (expandable to 25,600).

The EOS 700D employs a 9-point, all cross-type AF system that makes possible excellent focusing results regardless of image composition or subject pattern. Furthermore, the f2.8 cross-type central point delivers even greater focus precision when shooting with a lens with a maximum aperture of f/2.8 or faster. When capturing photos or videos in Live View, the camera’s Hybrid CMOS AF combines phase-detection AF and contrast-detection AF to deliver high-speed focusing performance.

Similar to the EOS 100D, the Movie Servo AF tracks and focuses on moving subjects continuously for a smooth and high-quality output during movie recording. When paired with the new EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM EF-S lens, the stepping motor in the lens allows the camera to achieve especially quiet and even AF operation.

The EOS 700D offers a selection of seven Creative Filters and also allows users to preview and apply these filters during Live View mode on the camera’s vari-angle clear view LCD touch screen before snapping a photo.

The new Background Blur Simulation function in Creative Auto mode helps users achieve an attractive bokeh in their photos. In this mode, the Live View display will simulate the background blur in real-time before the photo is taken. A simple slider interface allows users to adjust the depth-of-field to the desired blur level easily.

The new EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM interchangeable lens – ideal for capturing video
Employing a new focus mechanism design with a stepping motor (STM) and lead-screw type, the new EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM standard zoom lens is designed to provide smooth and quiet AF performance during video capture. This lens was created in response to the recent increase in video-recording needs among DSLR users.

The compact and lightweight lens, when paired with cameras equipped with Movie Servo AF, such as the EOS 100D or EOS 700D, provides greatly enhanced AF performance, even during Live View shooting. The lens further enables users to effortlessly set and maintain focus even for moving subjects, thus allowing even first-time users to capture great videos easily.

This new Canon standard-zoom lens includes special optical lens elements such as a high-precision aspherical lens, which effectively corrects various aberrations that can occur while zooming. With the EF-S18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM, users can expect high-resolution, high-contrast imaging performance across the entire zoom range. Through optimised lens positioning and coatings, the model also greatly minimises the occurrence of flare and ghosting.

In addition to image stablisation equivalent to approximately four shutter speed stops, the new lens is able to achieve a maximum magnification of 0.36x, allowing users to get closer to their subjects.
