SINGAPORE – July 14, 2010 – The Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC) and Samsung Electronics Co., Ltd., a global leader in the consumer electronics industry, today reaffirmed their partnership by announcing several initiatives aimed at sharing the spirit and excitement of the first-ever Youth Olympic Games with Singapore and the rest of the world. Samsung is a Worldwide Partner of the Youth Olympic Games.

These exciting initiatives include Samsung coming on board as the International Presenting Partner for the Singapore 2010 Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF), as well as the Olympic torch relay in Singapore; the appointment of Asian pop star JJ Lin as Samsung’s Youth Ambassador; the Samsung Mobile Explorer programme for active and talented youth from Singapore, China, and Korea to take part in Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games (Singapore 2010); and the Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010, which will provide personalised Singapore 2010-related information and services to athletes and National Olympic Committee (NOC) team officials through Samsung mobile phones.

Mr. Gregory Lee, Chief Executive Officer of Samsung Asia Pte outlined these initiatives at “Bringing Passion Forward with Samsung”. The event was officiated by Dr. Vivian Balakrishnan, Singapore’s Minister for Community Development, Youth and Sports. Mr. Ser Miang NG, Chairman of SYOGOC , Mr. Kee Nguan GOH, Chief Executive Officer of SYOGOC, members of the media, and other invited guests were also present.

Samsung as International Presenting Partner for the Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame

The Singapore 2010 Journey of the Youth Olympic Flame (JYOF) is the final countdown to the first-ever Youth Olympic Games. The Olympic Flame for the Singapore 2010 will be lit in Ancient Olympia, Greece, as with all modern day Olympic Games.

The Youth Olympic Flame will then blaze a trail to one city in each continent – Berlin, Dakar, Mexico City, Auckland and Seoul – symbolically connecting youth of the world to the Olympic Movement and uniting them in a global celebration of the upcoming YOG.

As the International Presenting Partner of the JYOF, Samsung will present a host of activities at city celebrations in each of the five international JYOF cities to welcome the Olympic Flame and to celebrate the Olympic movement.

JJ Lin as Samsung’s Youth Ambassador for Singapore 2010

Samsung today also announced the appointment of popular singer, songwriter and actor, JJ Lin, as its Youth Ambassador to the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. “JJ’s personality, passion, pursuit of excellence in his career, and active lifestyle makes him the perfect Samsung Youth Ambassador, representing the shared values of Samsung and Singapore 2010,” said Mr. Gregory Lee.

JJ Lin said, “I am honoured to represent Samsung at the Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games. I know the company is truly dedicated to young people and as the Youth Ambassador, I hope to contribute by sharing my experience and the excitement of the Games together with youth around the world.”

The Samsung Mobile Explorer Programme

The Samsung Mobile Explorer (SME) Programme is Samsung’s key programme in the Olympic Games. For Singapore 2010, 10 students will be selected from Singapore, China and Korea to take part in the SME. They will report “live” from the competition venues, at Culture and Education Programme activities and the various celebrations around Singapore using Samsung’s mobile technologies, and share their experiences of the first YOG with youth around the world. Digital Concierge for Singapore 2010

Under its sponsorship for Singapore 2010, Samsung is providing over 5,000 sets of Samsung OmniaLITE (B7300) mobile phones to athletes and key team officials. Singapore will be hosting the inaugural Youth Olympic Games (YOG) from 14 to 26 August 2010. The Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games will receive some 5,000 athletes and officials from the 205 National Olympic Committees (NOCs), along with an estimated 1,200 media representatives, 20,000 local and international volunteers, and more than 320,000 spectators. Young athletes – aged between 14 and 18 years – will compete in 26 sports and take part in a Culture and Education Programme.
