‘RoamEasy’ with Singapore’s first true single-rate for data roaming

StarHub’s new value-added service provides affordable, no-bill-shock smartphone data access in 20 popular destinations at launch

Singapore, 29 May 2013 – StarHub today announced that its mobile post-paid customers will be able to enjoy Singapore’s first true single-rate for data roaming with ‘RoamEasy’, from today. This new service charges a single data roaming rate of $10/50MB (Usual rate: $18/50MB) when customers connect to any mobile network in 20 popular overseas destinations (See Editor’s Notes for details). This price offers substantial savings on data roaming as compared to the standard rate of $20/MB. StarHub plans to progressively extend this service to the rest of the over 230 overseas destinations in its roaming footprint.

Said Mr Chan Kin Hung, Senior Vice President, Personal Solutions, StarHub: “Singaporeans are well-travelled people; most of them make at least one leisure trip abroad per year. With more than 80% of our customers on smartphones, we understand that they want to be able to continue using mobile data services with ease of mind when they are outside the country. We are therefore, very pleased to offer our customers a user-friendly and affordable single-rate data roaming service, so that they can leave their smartphone on auto-roaming mode for simple, hassle-free mobile data use.”

With RoamEasy, StarHub’s customers need not worry about bill shocks from accidentally connecting to a more expensive non-partner network when they travel to one of the 20 popular destinations. They also do not have to go through the hassle of manually setting their mobile device to connect to a partner network or to remember to activate their roaming service for special rates every day when they are overseas.

Instead, they would just need to turn on data roaming connection on their mobile device when they arrive at their destination, to immediately enjoy the affordable single data roaming rate regardless of which mobile operator they are logged on to.

To activate RoamEasy, customers simply SMS “SIGN ON” to 6818 from today. No activation fee or monthly subscription for RoamEasy is required to start using this service.

The data roaming rate offered by RoamEasy is based on 24-hour block of access starting 12 midnight (SGT). If a customer has utilised 50MB of data at any time within a day, he or she can start the next block of 50MB of data for only $10. This means that there will not be any bill shock even if the customer exceeds the 50MB block in a day.

To give RoamEasy customers peace-of-mind, StarHub sends SMS notifications to alert them on their data roaming usage when they utilise the first KB of data in a day, when they use 40MB of data and when they are at the start of the subsequent 50MB block(s).
