Today is Valentine’s day in Singapore. Yahoo! has compiled the top 5 searches in Singapore on Valentine’s day. One of the most interesting one is “Chinese Valentine Day”. Did not even occur to me that people will search for it.

Singapore’s Top Searches For Valentine’s Day

Singapore, 13 February, 2012– An event that originated from the ancient times, Valentine’s Day was initially celebrated by honoring to the Roman God of Fertility. However in the 21st century, Valentine’s Day has evolved and extended to friends getting together, family spending quality time, but mainly, couples celebrating their love for each other through symbolized acts of gifts exchange, candlelight dinners and expressing love in many different ways.

“Quotes remain an endearing form of expressing love and Yahoo! Search trends also witnessed the funside of Singaporeans as there were interesting searches for funny poems and quotes and also,Valentine’s day poem for fathers. Valentine’s day gift ideas, messages and promotion dinners remainedin the list of popular searches, as it does every year,” said Henryl Moreno, Manager, Editorial for Search & Platforms in Southeast Asia.

According to Yahoo! Search Trends, the Top 5 Most Searched Category for Valentine’s Day are:

  1. Valentine’s Day cards: An obvious choice for many and probably the most simplistic way to convey messages is through words. Yahoo! observed a 7,500% spike for searches on cards.
  2. Valentine’s Day pictures: Most Singaporeans resorted to showcasing affection through Valentine’s pictures, wall papers and hearts which were among one of the most searched items on Yahoo!. Quirky searches like unique forms/shapes of heart, pooh valentine cartoon were rather interesting findings that the searches on Yahoo! revealed. Also a noticeable trend that was observed on Yahoo! was Singaporeans scouring the web for images to display on their computer screens. Valentine’s Day images are also a great way to dish out creative ideas and lend a helping hand to those who need an idea or two on how to spice up their special day.
  3. Valentine’s Day quotes: With the prevalence of internet, literally anything is just a click away, even Valentine’s Day messages/quotes! To those who need a touch of zest to make that Valentine’s Day message or opener memorable, why not try the internet for ideas. Meaningful messages that are readily available online range from short messages suitable for text messaging, to long lengthy intellectual poems that will fit perfectly in a card and sure to put a smile on their lover’s face was searched on Yahoo! and witnessed a spike of 3,500%.
  4. Flowers: Almost a ritual of giving as an expression of love, flowers were an obvious choice for many. Singaporeans looked for various delivery options to send across flowers for their counterparts.
  5. Chinese Valentine Day: This was probably the most unique finding on Yahoo! this year where there were a lot of searches for ‘Chinese Valentine’s day’ which falls on the 7th day of the 7th lunar month in the Chinese calendar.

Contrary to popular beliefs where Valentine’s Day is a day where men are most pressured to get the right gifts for their wives or girlfriends, Yahoo! Search Trends revealed that women, too, are feeling the heat and turning to the Internet for ‘gift ideas for men’ as the day draws nearer. With the hectic schedule of many Singaporeans, it is a great relief for people to be able to purchase gifts online and ensure that they get delivered on time.
