First Windows Phone 7 Update Rolling Out, Details Within

Finally, I have done my first Windows Phone 7 update. No, it is NOT the “Cut and Paste” update that everyone is waiting for. It is just a minor update (according to Microsoft) that will enhance the update that will be coming in March 2011.

According to Microsoft Windows Phone blog, this update will enhance the updating experience for future update, without giving much details.

What’s in this update?

This first update for Windows Phone is designed to improve the software update process itself. So while it might not sound exciting, it’s still important because it’s paving the way for all future goodie-filled updates to your phone, such as copy and paste or improved Marketplace search.

In the future, I encourage you to check out our new update history page on the Windows Phone website for a brief, plain-English summary of what each update does or what features it adds to your phone.

Here is my first hand experience on the update. BTW, it does take some time to update the phone (20 minutes or less). You will need your PC with Zune software installed. There is NO OTA (Over The Air) update for this.

WP7 Software Update Process

  • Once you connect the phone to the computer, Zune will automatically starts.
  • If you don’t see the update, don’t panic. Go to Settings (Top bar), Click on “Update” option. You should be able to see “update available”.

  • Once you click “Update”, you will come to this page (see below).

  • It will update your Zune software. First the download.

  • Then the installation.

  • My only complain is that after the software update, it exits and there is no other prompt. You will need to restart Zune. BTW, here is the latest Zune software version.

  • After the Zune installation, it actually prompts me that update is available. If you miss it, you can always go to Setting and click on Update to check for latest software update.
  • It is 10 steps process. By updating the Zune software, you have completed Step 1.And once you click on the update, it will jump to step 2. During the update, you phone will show this, asking you not to unplug the phone from the connection to your computer.

  • At Step 6, it will reboot the phone.

  • At Step 7, it will create the Backup (necessary to roll back if there is an issue).

  • At Step 8, it will update the phone with the latest software version.

  • At Step 9, it will reboot the phone again.

  • At Step 10, it shows completing the updates.

  • Finally, the update is complete.

  • Once done, you can unplug the phone. I did a check on the Update again, and it shows that I have the latest update with an option to roll back to the backup version.

Did I see a difference after the update. No, at this moment. The latest version I have on my phone now is OS 7.0.7008.0
