If you are having an AVG 2011 software, and you tried to update it today, you might not be able to boot up your computer again. This is due to a botched update.
This issue was acknowledged by AVG and the update had since been pulled out. Here is the information from AVG forum.

If is possible to boot into Safe Mode, then run System Restore before the night AVG update and re-install AVG.
