WinX DVD Ripper Platinum for Windows: Review

Recently, I reviewed a software called WinX DVD Ripper from Digiarty Software. It is available for Windows and Mac.

As the name implies, it rips your DVDs so that you can watch it on your computer or devices. So, what is so great about this when there are already many software (free) that can do this job? This is actually my intention for this review 🙂 . Plus, I have 40 sets of this software as giveaway. Details later.

Introduction

This review is NOT to teach or show you how to rip a DVD and distribute. If you are thinking about using it this way, this post is not for you. This review is purely my thoughts and may not represent the market, people or company involved.

With more people using devices to watch movies on the move, it has become common that people are transferring their media content from disc to portable devices. And with a physical media like a DVD, there might be chances that it will fail due to wear and tear and etc.

Installing and Running the Software

You will need to go to Winx DVD Ripper website to download the file. It is about 8.6 Mb. The installation is very simple. I did my in less than 5 minutes.

The version that I installed is WinX DVD Ripper Platinum 5.11.2. It is for Windows OS.

You can actually take it for a free test ride but there will be limitation. It is limited to 5 minutes.

Of course, with the license, you get the full access and support (including future upgrades or change in the DVD format)

Using the WinX DVD Ripper

The Winx DVD Ripper software is easy to use.

  • Insert a DVD
  • Choose the Output format
  • Click Start

These 3 steps are basically what you need to do.

There are many formats that you can choose.

  • AVI
  • MP4/H.264
  • MPEG
  • WMV
  • FLV
  • MOV
  • Audio
  • iPod
  • iPhone
  • iPad
  • Apple TV
  • PSP
  • 3GP
  • Zune

In any of the format, you can tweak the settings to your likings. You can change the sampling rate, audio volume, screen size and etc. Once you press START, you will see this screen.

In their website, it states that it can rip a DVD in 5 minutes. However, I think we ought to be realistic. It is dependent on many factors. For example, your computer processor speed, your DVD drive speed and etc.

For me, I am using Vista Ultimate on a 4-core processor with 4 GB of RAM and a DVD Writer (forgotten about the speed) and for me to rip a DVD from my Ultimate Matrix Collection, it took my computer about 30 minutes.

I think most people would think that there are many free software out there that can do this. This is where the strong point of this software comes.

It can rip DVD with the latest protection technology. Unfortunately, I do not have any of the latest films that they mentioned.

In their website, it states that many ripping software are unable to do the job with such protected DVDs. In fact, they are so confident that they even have procedures to guide you how to rip those protected DVDs.

The Output

I put this software to test by ripping my Matrix Evolution DVD. It took about 30 minutes to do the job and the output file is a whopping 6 GB of data.

1:1 copy

The output format for this 1:1 copy is MPEG2. I used my DVD player (on my computer) to play it. The quality is very good and I could not detect any deterioration on the quality. BTW, I am not very particular in the output quality. Therefore, it is a very subjective comment on my side.

MP4 Format

Next, I performed another test to output to MP4 format. I selected the format without any change in parameter. Again, it took 30 minutes to perform this task and the output file is about 1.92 GB.

MP4 Format (altered settings)

I changed the MP4 format video settings to 1000 Kpbs (before: 2000 Kpbs) and the screen size to 640×360 (before: 720×404). The process is still 30 minutes (approximate) and the output file size is slightly more than 1 GB.

For both MP4 format, I can see pixelation on fast moving screen. This should be acceptable on small screen devices. In fact, on my HTC HD2, it is almost flawless.

Settings on WinX DVD Ripper

In my opinion, you do not need to touch any settings on the software. However, if you wish, here is what you can do.

And here is the profile page.

Actually, after a few testing on the settings, I found that it will take approximately 30 minutes on my computer to rip a DVD. And the file size after ripping to fit an iPhone or iPod is large. You may need to adjust the settings to get the file size and quality that you like.

There are also settings to on the audio quality, subtitle as shown below. Depending on your original disc, you can choose the subtitle language.

Summary

The WinX DVD Ripper software is easy to use. Of course, based on my short review, I am not able to achieve the 5 minutes ripping time due to my hardware. Nevertheless, it can rip DVD with the latest technology means that you can buy those DVDs and rip them to your media storage or devices for future viewing pleasures or safe keeping.

However, I am strongly against using it for distribution of any movies or documentary. It is NOT INTENDED for such purposes.
