Beware of Repairman at Computer Shops, Your Data is at Risk

This is scary. Imagine going to a well established repair shop to repair your computer, and getting your data “stolen”? This was what Sky News found out when an undercover reporter went to different shops to ask for repair on the computer.

Sky News actually did a simple fault (by loosening a chip) on the computer and requested a few “established” computer repair shops to diagnose and repair them. BTW, they also installed a surveillance software to quietly record log files and capture images through the laptop.

One of the shop (Laptop Revival in west London) was found snooping on the computer. Eventually, the technician used a thumb drive to copy some pictures of the undercover reporter (reminds me of Edison Chen case 🙂 ) and even the passwords to the several accounts.

What is amazing is that this technician even tried to log in to the bank account, but failed. Of course, all these passwords were fake.

It is amazing that all but one provided wrong diagnose and demanded a high repair cost (like replacement of mother boards). The only shop that diagnose the fault correctly repair it for free.

So, in future, ensure that you are around when they diagnose your computer or laptop.
