HTC Touch HD Review – Camera and Sample Pictures

If you are thinking of replacing your compact camera with HTC Touch HD 5 MegaPixels camera, you have to think twice, thrice because it just cannot perform its job well.

First Impression of the camera is that it is very slow and always lag. In layman term, it means you will get blurry picture under low light condition due to the nature of it. BTW, there are two cameras on the HTC Touch HD. One of them is just a VGA camera for Video Call purpose or add a mirror for the vain people (joking).

Obviously, HTC is not into Camera for their phone. If you search around, I am sure that there are many people that are NOT happy with the camera.

As you can see in the picture above, HTC has packaged a very cheap looking camera into the phone. The bulge on the camera (I believe) is for the autofocus mechanism. Otherwise, I think this camera is only useful for taking at bright light condition.

Some may disagree that because on the cover of the camera (see below pic), it states F2.8 (which means it can do well in low light condition. Just a simple way to understand F-stops, a human eye is F1.0. So, that means the lens is 2.8 times poorly (in performance) than our eyes. Hope that helps).

So, saying so much about the camera, what about the results? I will show you some sample of the pictures I have taken. Nothing were done on those pics except resizing it to the size suitable for this blog.

I set my camera to 5 MegaPixels and SuperFine. The pictures turn out to be 72pixels per inch and 2592 pixels X 1552 pixels in size.

Sample 1

This picture was taken inside my car in the morning with sunny sky. BTW, I have V-Kool on my car. So the ambience is not accurate to describe the auto white balancing (oh, talk too much on technical stuff, sorry!).

Sample 2

This picture is taken on the same time and day as Sample 1. This time I lowered down my windscreen and took this shot. Notice that the white balancing is not good.

Sample 3

This was taken in my study room on the same day. The object was my MSi Windbook U100 keyboard. I have just a fluorescent light in this room. Not external lighting was used. I had a hard time to ensure no camera shake. Therefore, it is impossible to shoot a moving object in this kind of condition.

Sample 4, 5 and 6

These 3 samples were taken at TCC (a restaurant) with lots of yellow (ambience) lighting. I am trying to test the autofocus function of the camera. BTW, it is quite difficult to take because as mentioned, it will create a lot of camera shakes.

Sample 7

My last sample is my wife. Haha. She likes the backdrop and I took the opportunity to shoot it with the Touch HD.

Notice that without the flash, you can still play around with the lighting to project moody image.

Conclusion

The HTC Touch HD cannot replace your compact camera. It is good if you want to take picture in bright light condition. The large screen helps too. If you have notice, the image taken is not the correct size because it is longer. There is a function on the phone for you to switch the camera to non wide screen mode. You will need to access the ADVANCED Menu. It is on the first page.
