Completed my first challenge this year. I had stopped cycling for more than 10 years and a few months ago, I started to pickup the sports to prep myself for this OCBC Cycling 40km event. Was glad to join as it was refreshing and fun. The event was held at F1 Pit Building near the Singapore Flyer. I went there one day earlier to collect my bib (5604) and cycling chip.<\/p>\n

About the Pre-Event<\/span><\/h2>\n

Collection is at F1 Pit Building, near the Singapore Flyer<\/p>\n

\n<\/span><\/p>\n

I went there on Friday to collect the bib and smart chip. I was quite surprised that the flow is smooth and it seems that they are ready for the big crowd.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

I collected smoothly and next, proceed to check my smart chip.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Next, proceed to the booths selling accessories. Was wondering why Conrad Hotel was there..<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

Anyway, bought a PRO wireless cycle computer at\u00a0 S$54, which I think is cheap.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

There are also many booths downstairs selling other things. They were not setup yet. Anyway, sell this Ben and Jerry’s van. Very cute.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

\"\"<\/a><\/p>\n

And before I went off, a look at the evening sky with the Singapore Flyer as the backdrop.<\/p>\n

Race Day<\/span><\/h2>\n

Was told to be there at 5:15am but when I reached, there were already a lot of cyclists. My only complaint is that there wasn’t any clear direction as to where the last wave of cyclists (bib number 5001 and above) should go. I asked the information counter and was told to stay at a dark corner, next to the group of number 3500 to 5000.<\/p>\n

Anyway, took a few shots with my friend. We purposely went to a lamp to get the lighting for this shot.<\/p>\n

There was a huge crowd but no ushers to tell us where to go. It seems that we are on our own (monkey see, monkey do). When we were finally flagged off, I realized that the last wave (for slower cyclists) has the most people.<\/p>\n

There were some cases that we have to stop at merging roads. Nevertheless, I think the organizers did well for such a big turn out. The stagger start is good and the aid stations were well spaced.<\/p>\n

Anyway, there are ample sponsored drinks for us to quench our thirst and many booths selling related products.<\/p>\n

Afterthoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n

The organizer did well in terms of crowd control but I guess the early morning part needs more signs and guidance for participants. The road closure is smooth for most part of the road but I guess some road merges are inevitable.<\/p>\n

The organizer should learn from this year lesson on their website. It was down on the eve of the 40km event. Many people could not see the information needed for the actual day.<\/p>\n

The weather was nice and overall, it is a good event. Will try again next year! BTW, this is my reward for going through this race.<\/p>\n
