The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonfoundation.co.uk\/\">James Dyson Foundation<\/a>\nis challenging innovative and entrepreneurial students and recent graduates to\ndesign something that solves a problem. Ingenuity can be found anywhere. We\nwant to support as many young inventors as we can. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>James\nDyson says: \u201cYoung engineers and designers have\nperspective and unbridled intelligence that makes them incredibly adept at\nproblem solving. Their ideas can easily be dismissed, but if nurtured and\ncelebrated they are transformative. Developing a product or technology is a\nlong and daunting process; the James Dyson Award celebrates the inventive young\npeople embarking on that process. The Award champions our next generation of\ninventors and will propel them towards future success. Past winners have sought to address food\nwaste, water conservation, pollution, medical treatment in developing countries\nand sustainability across all industries. The 2018 International Winner, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/2018\/project\/o-wind-turbine\/\">O-Wind\nTurbine<\/a>, addresses sustainable energy\ngeneration in urban environments with a new type of wind turbine that captures\nwind flowing in every direction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Boosting\nopportunities <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\naward has given young inventors international media exposure which has opened\nup further investment and opportunities for them to develop their ideas. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/past-winners\/\">Past\nwinners<\/a>, such\nas <a href=\"https:\/\/airgodesign.com\/\">Airgo<\/a>, the world\u2019s first full composite\naircraft passenger seat, <a href=\"http:\/\/petitpli.com\/\">Petit Pli<\/a>, expandable clothing for children, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mimicalab.com\/\">Mimica<\/a>, a bio-reactive food label, have been launched\ninto successful businesses, and the inventors of O-Wind Turbine were approached\nby investors soon after winning the award. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cCities are windy\nplaces but we are currently not harnessing this resource. Winning the\ninternational James Dyson Award has validated our concept. The attention we\u2019ve\nreceived so far has given us the confidence to see the development of this\nconcept as a future career. Already we are in discussions with investors and we\nhope to secure a deal in the coming months.\u201d O-Wind Turbine inventors, Nicolas\nOrellana and Yaseen Noorani.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2018 Singapore national winner \u2013 Folks Kitchenware<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2018Folks\u2019\nis a series of kitchenware that helps the visually-impaired prepare food safely\nwith convenience, confidence and dignity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/2018\/project\/o-wind-turbine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2018 international winner \u2013 O-Wind Turbine<\/a><\/strong> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>O-Wind Turbine is an\nomnidirectional wind turbine that can capture wind travelling in any direction,\nunlike conventional turbines. This allows it to be used in urban environments\nwhere wind flow is multi-directional. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/en-SE\/2018\/project\/excelscope-20-1\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2018 international runner up &#8211; Excelscope<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A team of students\nfrom the Netherlands invented an affordable way to detect malaria using a\nsmartphone, for use in developing countries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/2017\/project\/the-skan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2017 international winner \u2013 The sKan<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sKan is a low\ncost and non-invasive melanoma detection device invented by a team of medical\nand bioengineering undergraduates from McMaster University, Canada. The team\nare currently using the prize money to refine their design to ensure it passes the\nUS Food and Drug Administration standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/2016\/project\/ecohelmet\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2016 international winner \u2013 EcoHelmet<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>EcoHelmet is a\nfoldable, paper bike helmet for bike shares. It uses a honeycomb configuration\nto protect the head from impact and folds completely flat when not in use. It\nis currently in product development stages. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/2015\/project\/voltera-v-one-rapid-prototyping-of-electronics\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">2015 international winner \u2013 Voltera V-One<\/a> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Voltera V-One uses rapid\nprototyping principles that underpin 3D printing to produce printed circuit\nboards (PCBs) that help power appliances such as smart phones. One of their\nmodels is currently used by engineers at Dyson.&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/2014\/project\/mom\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\"2014 international winner - mOm (opens in a new tab)\">2014 international winner &#8211; mOm<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There are 1 million\npreventable neonatal deaths every year. mOm addresses this as a low cost,\nelectronically controlled, inflatable incubator for use in the developing\nworld. It has now launched as a business and is currently in development. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>About\nthe competition <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ncompetition brief: design something that\nsolves a problem. This problem may be a frustration we all face in daily life,\nor a global issue. The important thing is that the solution is effective and demonstrates\nconsidered design thinking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nprize:\nthe international prize is $52, 000 (plus $8, 600 for the winner\u2019s university),\ntwo international runners-up receive $8, 600 and each national winner receives $3,\n400. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nprocess:\nentries are judged first at the national level \u2013 before progressing to the international\nstage. A panel of Dyson engineers select an international shortlist of 20\nentries. The Top 20 projects are then reviewed by Sir James Dyson, who selects\nthe international winner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nJames Dyson Award runs in 27 countries and regions worldwide. These are:&nbsp; Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, China,\nFrance, Germany, Hong Kong, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea, Malaysia,\nMexico, Netherlands, New Zealand, Philippines, Russia, <strong>Singapore<\/strong>, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, Taiwan, UAE, UK, and USA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\ndeadline: midnight GMT on 11 July 2019<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>How to enter<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Candidates enter through an online application via the James Dyson Award <a href=\"https:\/\/www.jamesdysonaward.org\/en-SG\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\">website.<\/a> <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entrants\nshould concisely explain what their invention is, how it works, and their\ndevelopment process. The best entries are always realistic and sustainable,\nshow iterative development and solve a real problem. The best entrants submit\nimagery and video to support their application, with evidence of physical\nprototyping. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Eligibility\ncriteria<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Entrants\nmust be, or have been within the last four years, enrolled for at least one\nsemester in an undergraduate or graduate engineering or design related course at\nuniversity in a country or region chosen to participate in the James Dyson\nAward. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nthe case of team entries, all members of the team must be, or have been within\nthe last four years, enrolled for at least one semester in an undergraduate or\ngraduate program at a university in a country or region chosen to participate\nin the James Dyson Award, and at least one team member must have studied an\neligible subject.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Are you a problem solver?
