LG and Infineon are teaming up to present you the LG G8 ThinQ<\/sup> with ToF (Time of Flight) technology incorporated to the front-facing or selfie camera. ToF is not something new and more mobile devices are having it now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Basically, ToF technology is used for capturing 3D information that can be used in AR (Augmented Reality), VR (Virtual Reality) or face recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With its fast response and not affected by light from external source, it is good for face recognition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Infineon\u2019s\nREAL3TM<\/sup> image sensor chip will play a key role in the front-facing\ncamera of the upcoming LG G8 ThinQ<\/sup>, to be unveiled in Barcelona\nduring Mobile World Congress 2019. Building upon the combined expertise of\nInfineon and pmdtechnologies in algorithms for processed 3D point clouds (a set\nof data points in space produced by 3D scanning), the innovative sensor will\ndeliver a new level of front camera capability in a smartphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While other\n3D technologies utilize complex algorithms to calculate an object\u2019s distance\nfrom the camera lens, the ToF image sensor chip delivers more accurate measurements\nby capturing infrared light as it is reflected off the subject. As a result,\nToF is faster and more effective in ambient light, reducing the workload on the\napplication processor thereby also reducing power consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And due to\nits fast response speed, ToF technology is widely used in various biometric\nauthentication methods, such as face-recognition. What\u2019s more, because ToF sees\nobjects in 3D and is not affected by light from external sources, it delivers\nan excellent recognition rate, both indoors and out, ideal for implementation\nin augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) applications.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
