This year, thirteen teams triumphed in their respective categories to clinch the top awards, out of the 177 entries received.

“As Singapore continues to keep its competitive edge in innovation, it is important to provide the right environment, support and recognition for locally developed ICT solutions or applications,” said Mr. Eddie Chau, SiTF Awards 2011 Organising Chairman and also the first Vice Chairman of SiTF. “The annual SiTF Awards continues to be a critical platform to discover innovations and to nurture new ideas. We are excited to see a year on year increase in the number of nominations. This year, the SiTF Awards received a total of 177 entries, an increase of 20% over last year; reflecting the vibrancy of the local ICT scene.”

All nominations were required to present to a panel of judges comprising distinguished individuals of the ICT industry, CIOs of user companies, investors, academics and senior government officers, who were impressed by both the quality and quantity of submissions this year.

“We are very encouraged by the creativity and innovation shown by some of the local start-ups. With proper guidance and investment, I believe some have good potential to grow and become commercially successful,” said Mr. Bill Liu, a veteran of the ICT industry and one of the judges of the SiTF Awards 2011.

The outstanding applications which emerged as winners this year are able to utilize ICT to improve processes and even help to save lives – like the smartphone application by Dr Dana Elliott Srither, which enables the general public to provide proper and effective techniques for chest compressions during CPR. Another winner, the ‘Vehicle Damage Assessment System’ by SMRT Corporation, uses wireless technology to capture real-time information and feed it directly into the back-end system for further data analysis and reporting, helping to reduce data entry errors and improve repair turnaround time. Integrated Health Information Systems Pte Ltd, the winner in the E-Government category, eliminated the traditional way of ordering medications for inpatients with an automated, intelligent system leveraging two-factor authentication that reduces human errors and improves ward efficiency, and is the first of such electronic end-to-end closed-loop medication management systems to be implemented in Asia Pacific.

Students also unleashed their innovation by developing educational applications to promote more interactive learning, such as the interactive game on global warming by Tampines Primary School, and the mobile application of its school portal by Crescent Girls’ School, winners of Primary Student and Secondary Student categories respectively. The winner for the Tertiary Student category is ‘Silver Radar’ by Singapore Polytechnic’s School of Digital Media and Infocomm Technology, a system designed for civil defense agency, which integrates the whole rescue process from receiving an emergency call to the end of the rescue.

“This year, we are pleased to see an increase in quality of entries submitted by the schools. We are extremely heartened by the fact that youths under 16 in Singapore are so innovative and enthusiastic about ICT. We hope that schools will continue to send in submissions, in order to cultivate young talents who may become the future pillars of the industry,” said Mr. Chau.

Since last year, the SiTF Awards also features an additional ‘Judges’ Choice’ award, where the judges pick the category winner that is most innovative and promises the most market potential.
