It is an online store where consumers can purchase applications, games, music and even premium Xbox LIVE games on their Windows Phone 7 smartphones. To add to the convenience, consumers can even preview the applications before making their purchases.

“The new Windows Phone Marketplace will provide Windows Phone 7 users with a different experience. Not only will they be able to purchase Xbox LIVE games on their smartphones, there is also a strong emphasis on discoverability on Windows Phone Marketplace. Users will be able to easily find the applications they want, enhancing their experience on the phone. We’re also very encouraged by the fact that 35 local applications are now available on Windows Phone Marketplace as that is a strong testament of the interest that developers have in the platform,” said John Fernandes, Director, Business & Marketing Organization, Microsoft Singapore.

Over the years, Microsoft has developed a deep relationship with the local developer community. With Windows Phone 7, more than 1,000 Singapore-based developers have received individualized training with many more applications expected to be launched soon.

“In addition to the applications that we are announcing today, there are now close to 80 more local applications in the pipeline. We have a set of stringent criteria in place for developers who wish to submit applications on Windows Phone Marketplace to ensure that consumers get high quality applications all the time. We have also put in a significant effort to make it easy for applications to be developed on Windows Phone 7 through Silverlight and the XNA framework which are existing Microsoft platforms. With these extensions, developers can now easily port their expertise and create applications across the phone, PC, web and Xbox 360, which we believe will have a multiplier effect,” added Ziriad Saibi, Director, Developer & Platform Evangelism, Microsoft Singapore

The new locally developed applications cut across categories such as Utilities (BusGuide, SG Carparks, Book a Cab), Information (Queue Time, Wanderlust, SG After 12, CallEmergency, xinmsn) and Games & Entertainment (Xbox LIVE games such as CarneyVale: Showtime, and other games such as Galaxy Bunnies and Dino Parade).

Globally, more than half a million of Software Developer Kits were downloaded by the launch of Windows Phone 7 on October 12, 2010, strong endorsement to the interest that developers have in the newest mobile operating system in the market. Apart from the convenience that Windows Phone Marketplace brings to consumers, developers have been very quick to lavish praise at the ease at which they are now able to develop applications on the rich platform.

This sentiment is echoed by Teo Chor Guan from the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab. “We’re very proud that we were one of two local Xbox LIVE developers whose game was selected for the global launch of Windows Phone 7. We’ve developed many games across different platforms and developing the CarneyVale: Showtime game on Windows Phone 7 has been particularly easy because of our prior experience with developing Xbox games using the XNA Framework.”

“It’s great that anyone can now build an application for Windows Phone 7. I’ve received strong support from Microsoft, from advice and educational materials to the free developer tools, which have enabled me to get my application up and running very quickly. I’m extremely excited that my application is one of the first local applications available in Windows Phone Marketplace,” said Muhammad Mulyadi, developer for the BusGuide application.

Microsoft is also providing consumers with a great user experience by opening the Windows Phone Marketplace to selected partners. For instance, SingTel subscribers will be able to see a SingTel store-in-store in the Windows Phone Marketplace and applications such as SingTel Xplorer and SingTel IDEAS will be available to these subscribers. StarHub subscribers will be able to access the StarHub TV and StarHub Music Store applications. LG Windows Phone 7 users will also have access to the LG store where they will be able to access even more free applications developed directly by the company.

Local applications across categories:

Utilities

1. BusGuide

2. SG Carparks

3. Book a Cab

4. Petrol@SG

5. Upvise

6. Currency 7

7. Business Lead Tracker

8. Beautiful Lunar Calendar (BLC)

9. SG Buses

Games & Entertainment

10. CarneyVale: Showtime (Xbox LIVE)

11. Galaxy Bunnies

12. Dino Parade

13. ChickyMunk

14. MindReader

15. StarHub TV

16. StarHub Music

17. MemoGenius

18. SG Fine City

19. Translate

Information

20. Queue Time

21. Wanderlust

22. SG After 12

23. CallEmergency

24. xinmsn

25. Call Yourself

26. SG Pedia

27. SG Weather

28. SG 4D

29. SG Lottery

30. NewDay

31. SingTel IDEAS

32. SingTel Xplorer

33. My SingTel Account

34. StarHub Gee!
